Description
Bartlow serves as a primary human antagonist in the anime Tales of Zestiria the X, where he holds the influential position of chancellor and leads the city council of Ladylake, the capital of the kingdom of Hyland. He is a corrupt and ambitious politician driven by an unquenchable thirst for power. His central motivation is to consolidate his own authority, which brings him into direct and persistent conflict with Princess Alisha Diphda, whose idealistic and pacifistic approach to governing he views as a direct obstacle to his plans for the kingdom.

Throughout the series, Bartlow's role is that of a behind-the-scenes schemer who continually plots to eliminate Alisha and strip her of her political influence. He resorts to a wide range of underhanded tactics to achieve his goals, including lies, deceit, and acts of extreme violence. He is shown to be willing to escalate conflicts, such as by sending a massive battalion of twenty thousand soldiers to the border with the neighboring land of Rolance in an attempt to provoke a war, an action he frames as a necessary preemptive strike. To remove Alisha more directly, he secretly hires a group of assassins known as the Scattered Bones to kill her, convincing them of the righteousness of the mission by falsely claiming that Alisha is secretly allied with the enemy.

Bartlow's key relationships are defined by his antagonism. His primary adversary is Princess Alisha, whose every action he works to undermine. He also attempts to manipulate and control Sorey, the newly appointed Shepherd, seeing the young man's immense power as a tool to be used for his own purposes. He interacts with the Scattered Bones as a client, but their alliance eventually crumbles when they recognize the truth of Alisha's noble intentions. In his most treacherous act, Bartlow lies to Alisha's father, the aging and ailing King of Hyland, securing from him the full authority to deal with his own daughter on false charges of treason.

Over the course of the story, Bartlow's development is a downward spiral of escalating villainy. After his schemes to start a war and assassinate Alisha in the field fail, he resorts to brutal measures, including massacring Alisha's squadron and ordering the crucifixion of her mentor, Maltran, as bait to lure her into a trap. His final and most desperate act occurs when Alisha confronts him in the royal palace. In a violent struggle, the King of Hyland intervenes to protect his daughter and is fatally wounded by Bartlow's blade. Even after committing regicide, Bartlow shows no remorse and attempts to frame Alisha for the murder. However, his treachery is publicly exposed when Alisha's allies and the palace guards overhear his confession. With all avenues of escape closed and facing a life of imprisonment for his crimes, Bartlow chooses death on his own terms, declaring that there is still a way for him to win before throwing himself from a palace balcony to his demise. As a human politician, Bartlow possesses no supernatural abilities. His power is derived entirely from his political office, his wealth, his skill in manipulation, and his willingness to use military force to achieve his ends.
