Description
Monkey D. Rufy is the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates and the central protagonist of One Piece Film Gold. His background begins in the East Blue, where as a child he accidentally ate the Gomu Gomu no Mi, a Devil Fruit that gave his entire body the properties of rubber, at the cost of his ability to swim. Inspired by his childhood idol Red-Haired Shanks, Rufy set out to sea at the age of seventeen to find the legendary treasure One Piece and become the Pirate King. By the time of the film, he is a seasoned pirate with a bounty and a diverse, loyal crew.

In terms of personality, Rufy is cheerful, carefree, and often impulsive, acting on instinct rather than elaborate plans. He possesses an unwavering self‑belief and a fearless nature, rarely showing hesitation even against overwhelming odds. Despite his childish behavior and apparent lack of common sense, he demonstrates sharp intuition and deep emotional intelligence, especially when the wellbeing of his friends is at stake. He is fiercely protective of his crew and will not tolerate anyone who threatens or harms them.

Rufy’s primary motivation throughout the story is the same as always: to become the Pirate King and to protect his comrades. In One Piece Film Gold, this drive is tested when he and his crew arrive on Gran Tesoro, a giant entertainment ship run by the wealthy casino king Gild Tesoro. After being tricked into a massive debt and seeing his swordsman Roronoa Zoro captured and about to be executed, Rufy refuses to accept Tesoro’s philosophy that money rules all. Instead, he leads his crew in a high‑stakes heist to rescue Zoro and reclaim their freedom.

His role in the story is that of the defiant leader who directly challenges the antagonist’s worldview. He works alongside his crew, forms a temporary alliance with the thief Carina, and receives indirect support from his sworn brother Sabo, who appears briefly to prevent Marine interference. Rufy’s actions drive the plot forward and ultimately dismantle Tesoro’s golden empire.

Key relationships within the film include his deep bond with each member of the Straw Hat crew, particularly Zoro, whose capture motivates the entire rescue mission. His friendship with Nami is highlighted through her partnership with Carina, and his rivalry with Tesoro is central to the conflict. The brief appearance of his brother Sabo reinforces the familial loyalty that defines Rufy’s character.

Over the course of the film, Rufy undergoes no radical transformation, but his resolve to reject Tesoro’s cynical worldview is reinforced. He proves that freedom and friendship cannot be bought or controlled by wealth, which serves as the thematic climax of his personal arc in this story.

In terms of notable abilities, Rufy’s rubber body grants him immunity to blunt force, electricity, and allows him to stretch his limbs for powerful long‑range attacks. He has mastered the use of Haki, including the rare Conqueror’s Haki, and employs advanced techniques such as Gear Fourth, which he uses in the final battle to overpower Tesoro’s giant gold golem form. His combat style combines creativity, raw strength, and an ability to adapt mid‑battle, making him a formidable opponent.
