Description
Gildo Tesoro is the primary antagonist of the One Piece Film Gold. He is known as the Golden Emperor and was the proprietor of Gran Tesoro, the world's largest entertainment city-ship, before his defeat. He is a slender yet toned man with spiky, light-colored hair styled upwards and dark markings around his eyes. He typically dresses in flamboyant, expensive suits, accessorized with rings and a golden collar, reflecting his obsession with wealth.

Born into extreme poverty, Tesoro had a difficult childhood. His father was a gambler who died of an illness the family could not afford to treat, causing his mother to abandon him. At the age of twelve, he began stealing to survive, using money to buy friendships, though those friends left him after he suffered a significant gambling loss. As a teenager, he fell in love with a slave named Stella, who hated criminals. To be with her, he attempted to earn money legitimately to purchase her freedom. However, a World Noble entered the shop where she was held and bought her instantly. When Tesoro attacked the Noble in rage, he was subdued, branded with the Hoof of the Soaring Dragon, and enslaved. After two years of brutal servitude, he learned that Stella had died. Her death and his inability to save her due to lack of money shattered his spirit, replacing his previous goodwill with a pathological obsession for wealth. He was eventually freed five years later during Fisher Tiger's raid on Mary Geoise, returning to a life of crime with a new purpose: to amass so much power that he would never be controlled again.

Tesoro is a ruthless, sadistic, and supremely confident individual who believes that money is the only true power in the world. His personal philosophy is that without money, a person is nothing and will always be subjugated. Having once been a slave to the Celestial Dragons, he despises aristocrats and wealthy elites, though he ironically becomes the very thing he hates. He has developed a god complex over his domain of Gran Tesoro, believing he has the right to decide who laughs and who suffers. He takes particular joy in seeing the wealthy and powerful fall into debt and despair on his island, forcing them into the same slavery he endured. He hates uncontrolled laughter or joy without his permission, a rule enforced with lethal violence, mirroring the actions of the World Noble who once owned him.

His primary motivation is to use his vast fortune, which accounts for twenty percent of the world's Beli, to gain absolute power over the world, specifically to make the World Nobles bow to him. He wishes to erase the humiliation of his past by ensuring that no one is ever able to buy or control him or anyone he cares about ever again, as he failed to save Stella.

In the story of Film Gold, Tesoro acts as the host inviting the Straw Hat Pirates to Gran Tesoro. In reality, he sets a trap to imprison them and use them for his entertainment. He manages to capture and encase Roronoa Zoro in gold, using him as leverage to force the crew to participate in a high-stakes heist. His role is that of a corrupt king who controls everything within his city, from the security to the very air, which is filled with gold dust that allows him to control the citizens.

Tesoro commands a powerful organization. His key relationships include his subordinates: Tanaka, a Devil Fruit user who can phase through walls; Baccarat, who manipulates luck; and Dice, a powerful combatant. He has a business relationship with the Donquixote Pirates; after initially trying to kill Tesoro for stealing the Gold-Gold Fruit, Doflamingo eventually accepted him as an underworld business partner. His hatred is reserved for the Celestial Dragons, who represent everything he wishes to destroy, while his only love was the late Stella, whose memory haunts his actions.

Throughout the film, Tesoro serves as a dark parallel to Luffy. While Luffy seeks freedom for himself and his friends, Tesoro seeks control over everything to prevent the loss he experienced. His development is largely a tragedy shown through flashbacks, revealing that the villain was once a kind young man broken by the cruel system of the world. He demonstrates no redemption arc, remaining steadfast in his belief in the supremacy of gold until his physical defeat.

Tesoro possesses remarkable abilities both as a fighter and a ruler. He ate the Gol Gol no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows him to manipulate any gold he touches. He has awakened this fruit, enabling him to control the vast amounts of gold that make up Gran Tesoro itself, effectively turning the city into part of his body. He typically uses gold powder to infiltrate the bodies of guests, allowing him to encase them in solid gold or control their movements at will. In combat, he is extremely formidable, capable of coating himself in a massive golden golem named the Golden Golem. In this state, he can unleash devastating attacks such as Golden Flame, which involves superheating the gold for explosive punches, and Golden Light, a laser fired from the golem's eyes capable of sinking warships. He is also proficient in using Armament Haki, which he layers over his gold constructs to increase their destructive power. Despite his immense wealth and power, his reliance on his Devil Fruit abilities and his arrogance become weaknesses, ultimately leading to his defeat by Monkey D. Luffy. Following his defeat, he was arrested by CP0, losing all his wealth and power.
