Description
Kanade Yuzuriha, often called Yuzu by those close to him, is a central figure in the story and a second-year high school student known for his exceptional talent in music composition. He serves as the composer, guitarist, and pianist for the masked band "In NO Hurry to Shout," a group he formed to give his musical creations a voice. His nickname for Nino Arisugawa, the band's lead vocalist, is "Alice," a name he chose because he felt her surname was too long.
Yuzu’s past is the key to understanding his intense and often contradictory personality. As a child, he was hospitalized with an illness that severely affected his throat and prevented him from singing. To channel his stifled passion for music, he would secretly escape to the beach every Wednesday to write musical scores in the sand. It was there he met a young Nino, who happened upon his music and began to sing it. Upon hearing her voice, Yuzu was instantly captivated, declaring that he had finally found "his voice". He formed a strong bond with Nino, asking her to return every week to sing his compositions. This period of creativity came to an end when Nino, distraught over the departure of her other childhood friend Momo, began to scream uncontrollably on the beach. In a desperate attempt to calm her, Yuzu sang to her, knowing that the act would cause permanent damage to his own voice, potentially silencing him forever. Shortly after, he was transferred to another hospital, leaving behind a farewell song for Nino before they were separated for years.
In his teenage years, Yuzu exhibits a personality that can be described as tsundere, often appearing shy, irritable, or dismissive, which belies his deeper, more caring emotions. When confronted with an embarrassing truth, such as his feelings for Nino, his instinct is to deny it vehemently, even when his actions make his true feelings obvious to everyone around him. He is sensitive about his short stature and is frequently seen drinking from a large carton of milk, a habit that has become a personal trademark. Despite his prickly exterior, Yuzu can become unexpectedly straightforward and offer sincere, practical advice when someone he cares about is in trouble. He is intensely possessive of Nino's singing voice, which he considers his own, and he is tormented by jealousy over her lingering attachment to Momo, his romantic and musical rival.
Yuzu's primary role in the story is that of a catalyst and a moon who is hopelessly in love with the sun. He is the one who discovers Nino in high school and invites her to join his band, giving her a new purpose and a way to channel her overwhelming emotions through song. His motivation is two-fold: he wants to use the full power of Nino's voice to break through his own composer's block and bring his music to life, and he is secretly motivated by a long-standing, unrequited love for her. He hopes to keep her by his side through their musical partnership, even going so far as to form a masked band so that an anonymous vocalist could replace her if she ever left, a plan that ultimately failed because no one could replicate the unique power of her voice.
His key relationship is, of course, with Nino. He loves her deeply and sees her voice as the only true instrument for his compositions, using his music to express feelings he cannot say aloud. At one point, he even dates a girl named Miou, using her as a substitute for Nino because she bore a resemblance and could serve as a decoy vocalist for the band, a fact that Miou herself painfully acknowledges. His relationship with Momo is one of a friend and a fierce rival; they are connected by their shared past with Nino and their mutual talent for music, which puts them in direct competition both for Nino's heart and for success in the music industry.
Throughout the story, Yuzu undergoes a subtle but significant development. He begins as a character who runs from his feelings, using denial as a shield. As the narrative progresses, his actions begin to speak louder than his denials. He actively competes with Momo, supporting Nino at her lowest points and claiming her for his band. He is always present for her, from teaching her to play Momo's old guitar to picking her up after a disastrous audition and taking her to her first live concert with In NO Hurry to Shout. While he still struggles to verbalize his love, his devotion shifts from a possessive claim over her voice to a more selfless battle to be the person who can provide the music for her heart. As a composer, his ability was once blocked, and it was only reignited upon reuniting with Nino. He also suffers from the physical consequence of his childhood sacrifice for her, having lost his own ability to sing, a limitation he works around by lip-syncing to a pre-recorded track as his masked persona "Cheshire" in the band. Physically, Yuzu is notably short, with striking, long eyelashes and unkempt black hair that he often ties into a loose ponytail. His notable abilities are entirely musical; he is a prolific and passionate composer who can write complex scores, and a talented multi-instrumentalist on the piano and guitar, using these talents to wage a war of music and love against his rival, Momo.
