TV-Series
Description
Mahiru Koizumi is a student of Class 77-B at Hope's Peak Academy, where she holds the title of the Ultimate Photographer. She is a young woman with short, dark red hair cut in a bob, light freckles across her cheeks, and green eyes. Her typical outfit consists of an olive-green school jumper over a white shirt with a plaid orange-and-white tie, paired with dark green knee-high socks and forest green shoes.
Mahiru comes from a family that deeply influenced her worldview and her art. Her mother was a famous war photographer whose career kept her away from home for much of Mahiru's childhood. Despite this absence, Mahiru greatly admired her mother and was inspired to follow in her footsteps. In contrast, her father was largely irresponsible and left the burden of housework and household management to Mahiru from a young age. This family dynamic is the primary source of her personality traits. Having had to be the responsible one at home, she developed a sensible, no-nonsense attitude and can be very strict with those she perceives as lazy or lacking initiative. Her disappointing experience with her father is also the reason she holds men to a much higher standard than women, often being abrasive and quick to scold boys while being far more tolerant, friendly, and sympathetic toward girls. Despite her confident and outspoken exterior, Mahiru harbors self-esteem issues, often feeling that her talent as a photographer is inferior to the more spectacular abilities of her Ultimate classmates.
As the Ultimate Photographer, Mahiru has won numerous awards for her work, even before enrolling at Hope's Peak. While she is skilled in many genres of photography, her specialty is portrait photography, and her favorite subjects are people smiling. She believes it is a photographer's duty to document everything, whether beautiful or horrible, as photographs capture the truth of a moment. She dislikes taking selfies, finding them embarrassing. Her dream is to travel to different countries to photograph people from diverse backgrounds sharing their genuine smiles. In her daily life, she often carries a camera to document her experiences, believing it is important to create a record of shared moments so that people do not forget them.
In Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School Despair Arc, Mahiru is an active member of Class 77-B. She is shown interacting with her classmates and trying to adapt to their often chaotic and eccentric behavior. She quickly befriends several of her female classmates, including Hiyoko Saionji, Mikan Tsumiki, and Ibuki Mioda, referring to them as her closest friends. She also maintains a close friendship with a girl named Sato, a student in the school's Reserve Course whom she knew from middle school. Mahiru would often prepare lunch to eat with Sato on the school grounds.
The Despair Arc reveals a tragic event from Mahiru's past that haunts her. She and her friends discovered a corpse in the music room, which was later revealed to be Natsumi Kuzuryu, the younger sister of her classmate Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu. It is uncovered that Natsumi had been bullying Mahiru, and in response, Mahiru's friend Sato murdered Natsumi. Feeling protective of Sato, Mahiru helped cover up the evidence of the crime, taking photographs of the scene and disposing of crucial fragments. Her actions, born from a desire to protect a friend, would have devastating consequences. Not long after, Fuyuhiko discovered the truth about his sister's death and killed Sato in retaliation. This traumatic series of events is a source of great guilt and sorrow for Mahiru.
Throughout the Despair Arc, Mahiru is a generally sensible and grounding presence within her class, often acting as a voice of reason. However, her story is ultimately a tragic one. Along with the rest of Class 77-B, she is eventually exposed to the brainwashing tactics of Junko Enoshima. After witnessing the public execution of their beloved class representative, Chiaki Nanami, Mahiru and her classmates fall into despair. As a member of Ultimate Despair, Mahiru is implied to have used her photography skills for destructive purposes, capturing gruesome images to spread despair as propaganda. Her role in the story concludes with her and her classmates being placed into the Neo World Program in an attempt to rehabilitate them. After being cured of her brainwashing, she awakens and joins the surviving members of her class in their decision to atone for the sins they committed as members of Ultimate Despair.
