Description
Ibuki Mioda is a student of Class 77-B at Hope's Peak Academy, where she holds the title of Ultimate Musician. Before being scouted for the prestigious institution, she attended an all-female school and was the guitarist for a popular light music club band that produced a million-selling hit single. However, due to creative differences with the group, who preferred traditional pop music, Ibuki left to pursue a solo career that focused on her genuine interest in heavy metal.
With an appearance that reflects her musical tastes, Ibuki has a punk-inspired aesthetic featuring multi-colored hair styled into horn-like strands, pink eyes, and accessories such as multiple ear piercings. Her personality is defined by boundless energy, enthusiasm, and a tendency to go on bizarre, unrelated tangents in conversation. She is known for speaking in the third person and addressing her classmates by their first names with the honorific "chan". While her behavior can be shocking or confusing at first, she is generally recognized as one of the most spirited and warm-hearted members of her class. She dislikes dull activities like reading and studying and has a habit of writing memos to help her remember things she might otherwise forget quickly.
In the Despair Arc, Ibuki serves as a prominent member of Class 77-B and acts as a mood maker among her peers. She is frequently seen playing her guitar, which in one instance doubles as a flamethrower to grill meat during a classroom performance. Her role involves participating in various class activities, such as video game racing with Chiaki Nanami and Hiyoko Saionji, and showing concern for her friends during turbulent events. Alongside classmates Mahiru Koizumi, Hiyoko Saionji, and Mikan Tsumiki, Ibuki becomes entangled in the Twilight Syndrome Murder Case, where they discover the body of Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu's sister, an event that deeply affects her.
Ibuki shares particularly close friendships with several members of her class. She is often seen alongside Mikan Tsumiki, Hiyoko Saionji, and Mahiru Koizumi, forming a tight-knit group of friends. She has a noted affinity for cute girls and openly admires her female classmates. Despite her cheerful exterior, she can be perceptive and caring, showing concern for others' well-being and becoming frightened when violence touches the group.
Throughout the Despair Arc, which depicts the fall of Class 77-B into madness, Ibuki is ultimately corrupted along with her classmates. After being lured into a trap by Junko Enoshima and forced to witness the brutal execution of Chiaki Nanami, Ibuki and the rest of her class are brainwashed into becoming members of Ultimate Despair, the group responsible for plunging the world into The Tragedy. As a Remnant of Despair, she uses her musical talents to rally the army of despair and spread chaos.
A notable ability that comes with her title is enhanced hearing. Her sense of sound is so powerful that she can identify who is speaking in complete darkness and recall the order in which people spoke, a skill that later proves crucial in class trials. She is also a skilled costume maker, designing and sewing her own distinctive stage outfits. Her musical talent is immense; she is a capable songwriter and can reportedly play bass and drum parts simultaneously on her guitar.
After the events of the Killing School Trip on Jabberwock Island, where she falls victim to the Despair Disease and is murdered by Mikan Tsumiki, Ibuki is eventually restored to her pre-despair self. Along with the rest of her class, she regains consciousness and chooses to atone for the destruction caused as a member of Ultimate Despair.
