Description
Nekomaru Nidai is a student of Hope's Peak Academy's Class 77-B and holds the title of the Ultimate Team Manager, also referred to as the Super High School Level Coach. In Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School: Despair Arc, he appears as part of the group of students whose daily lives at the academy are depicted leading up to the events of the Tragedy and the Killing School Trip.
His background is marked by a difficult start in life. Born with a heart disease that left him frail and frequently hospitalized, Nekomaru was not expected to survive past his youth. While in the hospital, he met another young patient named Daisuke, who served as a manager for a sports team despite his own illness. Many people visited Daisuke, showing the impact a team manager could have on others. Daisuke passed away before his team could achieve victory, and this experience inspired Nekomaru to dedicate himself to becoming a coach in order to carry on his friend's dream. Over time, he overcame his physical limitations through rigorous training, developing an imposing physique and a relentless drive.
Personality-wise, Nekomaru is vigorous, openhearted, and extraordinarily loud. He frequently shouts, but his boisterousness stems from a genuine passion for supporting others and a desire to push people to reach their full potential. He is compassionate and deeply loyal, always ready to encourage his friends and classmates. Despite his intimidating appearance, he has a gentle nature, though he can be stubborn when his beliefs are challenged. He also suffers from chronic dyspepsia, which sometimes causes him discomfort during his intense training sessions.
Nekomaru's primary motivation is to help others improve and succeed. As a coach, he has trained athletes in a wide range of sports, including figure skaters capable of performing six-revolution spins and tennis players who turned near-losses into victories after grueling practice sessions. He believes in hard work and perseverance, and he applies these principles to his own life as well as to those he mentors.
Within the story of the Despair Arc, Nekomaru plays a supporting role as a member of the lively Class 77-B. He is shown participating in various school activities, often serving as an energetic and motivating presence. His most significant relationship is with Akane Owari, a fellow student with a talent for gymnastics. The two form a close bond through their shared love of physical training, and Nekomaru frequently spars with her to help her improve. He also interacts warmly with other classmates, such as Kazuichi Soda and Teruteru Hanamura, though his loud demeanor sometimes overwhelms them.
Nekomaru's development in the series is tied to his descent into despair. After witnessing the growing influence of the despair-inducing brainwashing, he and his classmates are eventually corrupted. He becomes fully brainwashed into the Ultimate Despair, losing his original motivations and joining the plan to spread despair across the world. This transformation marks a tragic end for a character who once embodied hope and encouragement.
Notable abilities include his immense physical strength and stamina, honed through years of training. His coaching talent allows him to analyze and improve the performance of others rapidly. In later events outside the Despair Arc, he is mortally wounded while protecting Akane and is rebuilt as a cyborg, gaining enhanced durability and combat capabilities, though that development occurs after the timeline of the Despair Arc.
Overall, Nekomaru Nidai is a vibrant and inspiring figure whose unwavering dedication to helping others is ultimately subverted by the despair that overwhelms his world.
