Description
Hayate is the male protagonist of the story, a popular and highly skilled dancer known for his charismatic stage presence. He is active on the video platform Smile Douga, where he has earned the title of dance prince and is embarking on an official debut as a dance idol. His initial encounter with the female lead, Ai, happens when he is searching for backup dancers and is immediately struck by her dancing ability in her female guise.
In terms of personality, Hayate often comes across as a classic extrovert. He can be hot-headed, open with his emotions, and acts as the red oni to Ai's more reserved blue oni, driving their dynamic forward with his enthusiasm and competitive fire. While he projects a touch and somewhat macho attitude when interacting with other males, he is notably sweet and kind toward girls. Although he has a reputation for being flirty or a womanizer, he is described as pure at heart, only dating someone he truly loves and politely turning down others. He is also a sensible and motivating person who knows how to apologize and encourage others, serving as a great support system for his partner.
Hayate's primary motivation stems from his passion for dance and his competitive desire to be the best. He is initially driven to succeed as a solo dancer before his path converges with Ai's. His role in the story is to act as the catalyst for the plot; he discovers Ai's talent and inadvertently brings her into the professional dance world. Together, they are formed into the male idol unit Buddyz by a producer, forcing them to live and work together as partners. His core conflict revolves around his growing feelings for Ai, complicated by the fact that he believes he is living with a boy while falling for her female persona.
Hayate's key relationship is, of course, with Ai. It evolves from a simple rivalry, where he sees her as a competitor he wants to beat, into a complex bond encompassing partners, rivals, and lovers. He is perceptive enough to discover Ai's true gender relatively early on, but keeps this secret to protect her and their unit, which only deepens his internal conflict and his resolve to support her. He also has a professional relationship with his producer, Sameko, and is mentioned to be the youngest in his family.
Throughout the story, Hayate undergoes significant development. He moves from a state of confusion over his feelings for a person with a double identity to finding the courage to confess his feelings for Ai directly, demonstrating his seriousness and emotional maturity. His jealousy, which he does feel at times, never prevents him from letting Ai pursue her own growth as a dancer, and he truly appreciates her efforts.
As a dancer, Hayate is remarkable for his exceptional skills and his boundless enthusiasm for the art form. He is also characterized by his physical ability to perform complex dance routines and his strong stage presence, which is what initially inspires Ai. His notable ability lies not just in his dancing, but also in his emotional intelligence and his capacity to be a perceptive and supportive partner both on and off the stage.
