Description
Kaito is a childhood friend of the protagonist, Kei Nagai, and serves as a crucial pillar of support throughout the story. Standing at 166 centimeters tall with a lean build, Kaito is a young man with a distinctive appearance featuring dyed blonde hair styled in an undercut, which contrasts with his natural black hair color, and sharp golden-yellow eyes beneath thick eyebrows. Aged seventeen, he is depicted as someone who appears carefree and easygoing on the surface, but this exterior belies a deeply complex and altruistic nature.

Kaito's background is marked by a series of experiences that shaped his unwavering willingness to help others. In his childhood, he was close friends with Kei, but their friendship was severed when Kei’s mother ordered her son to stop associating with him because Kaito was the son of a convict. This rejection hurt Kaito deeply, yet it became a defining pattern in his life where his acts of kindness were rarely reciprocated. For instance, he once took a severe beating to retrieve a friend's wallet, only for that friend to offer no thanks but still receive a positive response from Kaito for a later invitation. These events cultivated a personality that Kei himself describes as a pure altruist; Kaito possesses an innate, almost involuntary drive to aid anyone in trouble, regardless of the personal consequences or the likelihood of gratitude.

Despite not being as intellectually sharp as Kei, Kaito is highly resourceful and capable of making tactical decisions, skills that prove vital when they are on the run together. His personality is defined by a remarkable positive and determined attitude, even as the situations he faces become increasingly dire. However, this is not to say he is without inner conflict. He is shown to feel the weight of the endless favors he does for others, once muttering to himself about the trouble it all brings, and he admits to hating what he perceives as his own foolishness for constantly putting himself in harm's way for others.

As the story progresses, Kaito’s role expands from that of a simple helper to a fugitive and then an inmate. After assisting Kei in escaping from the authorities following the revelation that Kei is an Ajin, a demi-human who cannot die, Kaito is arrested and sent to a juvenile prison. His altruism does not fade in this harsh environment. He repeatedly intervenes to protect a fellow inmate named Takeshi Kotobuki, a young Ajin, from being beaten by other prisoners. Initially cold and dismissive of Kaito's help, Kotobuki eventually comes to respect his unwavering nature and repays the kindness by aiding Kaito's escape from prison when he learns that Kei is in danger.

Kaito's primary and most significant relationship is with Kei Nagai. Despite having been abandoned by Kei years prior without resentment, Kaito immediately offers his unconditional support upon learning of Kei's situation. He does not care that Kei is an Ajin, insisting that he is still human and that he will help him no matter what. This loyalty is not born of expectation or a desire for reciprocation but seems ingrained in his character. Even when Kei leaves him behind to protect him, Kaito respects this wish but remains ready to come to his aid instantly when needed. This dynamic culminates in a dramatic reunion where Kaito arrives on a motorcycle to provide a crucial distraction, ultimately taking a bullet for Kei, an injury from which he miraculously recovers.

One notable aspect of Kaito is his unique effect on Ajin abilities. It is implied that he may have manifested latent Ajin-related traits at a young age. His presence and his own IBM, or Invisible Black Matter, are said to have an abnormally large output, which in turn allows Kei to manifest and control multiple black ghosts, a nearly unheard-of feat among demi-humans. Furthermore, Kaito demonstrates a resistance to the debilitating effects of the Ajin scream, a weapon that typically paralyzes humans with fear, and he is also able to see the otherwise invisible black ghosts. This combination of deep-seated altruism, unshakable loyalty, resourcefulness, and unique supernatural compatibility makes Kaito an indispensable and defining force in the narrative.
