Description
Jeanne d'Arc is first introduced as a legendary figure whose past is marked by tragedy and loss. Prior to the events of Virgin Soul, she was a holy knight who served as the captain of the Orleans Knights and a vessel for the gods. However, after being corrupted into a demon and subsequently killing several angels, including her guardian Michael, she was stripped of her divine protection as punishment for her sins. This loss of heavenly favor left her as a simple human knight, a shell of her former powerful self, and she struggled to protect even a single child from a demon attack.

By the time of the series, which takes place a decade after the original Rage of Bahamut, Jeanne is a woman in her late twenties. Her personality is defined by a deep, unshakeable faith that persists despite the gods having abandoned her and the immense suffering she has endured. She is steadfast, principled, and honorable, refusing to compromise her beliefs even when faced with severe consequences. This is most clearly demonstrated when the new king, Charioce XVII, begins a campaign to defy and dethrone the gods. Jeanne openly opposes his actions and his vision for an era where humans stand above deities and demons. For her defiance, she is stripped of her rank and banished from the royal capital. She accepts this punishment and retreats to a solitary life as a farm girl on the outskirts of the city, continuing to pray to the archangel Michael.

Her core motivation shifts dramatically with a miraculous event. While living in exile, she gives birth to a child named El, or Mugaro, a being born of a human and an angel. Jeanne believes this child is a blessing granted to her by Michael in answer to her prayers. From that moment, her primary driving force is the protection of her son. This maternal instinct is her most powerful and consuming motivation. When El’s divine powers are discovered by King Charioce, who views the child as a threat, Jeanne goes to desperate lengths to hide him, including soaking him in demon blood to disguise his appearance and cutting off his wings. She is ultimately captured by the king's forces and imprisoned for years, enduring torture and interrogation, but she resolutely refuses to reveal her son’s whereabouts in exchange for her freedom.

In the story of Virgin Soul, Jeanne initially plays the role of a tragic, broken prisoner. Her path crosses with the protagonist, Nina Drango, in the king’s labor camp, and the two form a bond, with Nina vowing to help her escape. Upon breaking free, her role transforms into that of a revolutionary leader. Following the death of her son at the hands of the king's machinations, her grief and desire for justice ignite a rebellion. She rallies an army of humans, demons, and angels—all victims of Charioce’s tyranny—and leads a full-scale assault on the capital. Her initial desire to live peacefully with her son is supplanted by a righteous fury that turns her into the central figure of the resistance against the king.

Her key relationships are central to her character arc. Her bond with her son, El, is the emotional core of her story. She also has a significant, though non-romantic, connection with the archangel Michael, who is the father of her child and the object of her unwavering devotion. Her relationship with Nina is one of mutual respect and aid, as Jeanne confides her past to the young woman and is inspired to hope again. She also forms a powerful alliance with the demon Azazel, as the two share a common enemy in King Charioce and fight side-by-side with remarkable synergy in the final battles.

Jeanne undergoes profound development throughout the series. She begins as a fallen hero who has lost her power, her status, and her purpose, living in quiet atonement. She becomes a desperate mother willing to sacrifice everything for her child. Finally, after experiencing the ultimate loss, she is forged into a formidable and vengeful leader who channels her personal tragedy into a war for the liberation of all oppressed peoples. This journey transforms her from a passive victim of circumstance into an active force for change.

In terms of abilities, Jeanne is a masterful swordswoman and a highly skilled military strategist and leader, possessing a natural charisma that inspires others to follow her into battle. Even without her former divine gifts, her courage and tactical mind make her a formidable fighter. Later in the series, she is blessed by the angel Sofiel, which grants her a new power: a pair of white wings that allow her to fly and a new holy spear capable of firing powerful projectiles. This new power elevates her from a skilled knight to a celestial warrior once more, allowing her to stand on equal footing with the demon Azazel and lead the charge against the king’s elite Onyx Task Force.
