Description
Karen Kurutsu is the daughter of the town mayor on Urashima. Born on October 5, 1981, she is seventeen years old for most of the story. As a member of the Kurutsu family, she belongs to one of the island’s three most prominent households, known as the "浦岛御三家".
In terms of personality, Karen is in the midst of a forceful rebellious phase. Her manner of speech is notably rough and tomboyish, and she carries a knife with her wherever she goes. Despite her tough exterior and frequent rebellious outbursts against her family and the island's conservative traditions, she is actually a girl of common sense compared to many other islanders. She is emotionally expressive and deeply values personal bonds, though she remains rather immature and inexperienced when it comes to romance. Her intelligence, particularly in academic subjects, is not particularly strong, and she often requires tutoring.
The central driving motivation for Karen is her longing to escape the island and reach the mainland. This desire is largely inspired by her mother, Natsumi Kurutsu, who left the family and the island five years prior to the story’s beginning. Karen both admires her mother and resents the restrictive environment of the island, seeing escape as the only path to a meaningful future. Her wish to leave is not merely a fantasy; she actively plots and attempts to stow away on boats to achieve this goal.
In the unfolding events, Karen is one of the first inhabitants the protagonist encounters. Their initial meeting is unorthodox, as he awakens her from a hiding spot on a boat by kissing her, which she does not appreciate. Later, seeking to earn money for her escape, she takes a part-time job as a maid at the Ohara residence, where the protagonist also works. This shared workplace forces them into close contact and forms the basis of their evolving relationship. She initially views the protagonist as someone from the mainland, which fuels a strong curiosity about him.
Karen’s key relationships are central to her character arc. She has a complex dynamic with her family, particularly her father, the镇长, who is strict and represents the authority she wishes to defy. Conversely, she is notably close to her elder brother, Subaru Kurutsu, and displays a significant degree of what is described as a "brother complex," trusting him for support. She also has a strained but respectful friendship with Sara Garando, with whom she lived for a period and often argues despite holding genuine respect for her. Furthermore, she is bound by an arranged marriage to Taro Harisu, a situation she actively seeks to escape as part of her broader rebellion against island customs.
Development occurs as her initial, romanticized dream of the mainland is confronted with harsh reality. Her quest leads her to discover that her mother has died, forcing Karen to confront the truth behind the parent she idealized. This revelation ultimately causes her to re-evaluate her shallow understanding of her mother’s choices and her own motivations. The experience matures her, and she eventually decides to return to the island to complete her education rather than simply running away. Her arc concludes on the mainland some time later, where she has become a university student, having achieved her goal of leaving the island through legitimate means rather than mere escape.
Karen possesses specific notable abilities. Despite her academic struggles, she proves herself to be an extremely capable and no-nonsense maid, excelling at cleaning and cooking. She is also a strong swimmer, which is demonstrated during her various attempts to reach an offshore facility.
