Description
Hiiro is the central protagonist of the anime Cerberus, a young apprentice swordsman whose life is defined by a childhood tragedy known as the Balbagoa Tragedy. Ten years before the main story, Hiiro's parents, Bairo and Kismitete, were among a group of sorcerers who performed a ritual in an attempt to seal the evil dragon Daganzord. The ritual failed due to outside interference, resulting in the death of his parents and earning Hiiro’s rescue from the event by a family servant named Giruu. This event left a permanent physical mark on Hiiro: a distinctive scar that extends from his neck to his chest, evidence of the magical exchange that placed the heart of the evil dragon Daganzord within his own body.

Swearing to avenge his parents, Hiiro dedicated ten years to training in swordsmanship under the reluctant tutelage of Giruu. Driven by a powerful desire for revenge against Daganzord, a sixteen-year-old Hiiro decides to leave his home and embark on a journey to slay the dragon. His personality is marked by a pronounced overconfidence and a grandiose sense of self-worth, often displaying behavior that resembles a “chunibyo” or someone who has delusions of grandeur regarding his own abilities. He is naive and has a limited understanding of the world, which makes him easily deceived by unscrupulous merchants and leads to a host of preventable problems. Despite his boastful claims of being a powerful sword-fighter, he shows a notable aversion to hard work and often only trains when forced by Giruu. This combination of arrogance and a lack of practical skill means he struggles to defeat even a simple slime in combat, a fact that frequently tests the patience of those around him.

Hiiro’s role in the story is that of a reluctant hero whose journey for revenge forces him to confront his own severe limitations. He is almost entirely dependent on his mentor, Giruu, who acts as his caretaker and protector; without Giruu, Hiiro would be unable to survive his daily life, let alone pursue his vengeance. The plot is driven by his quest to confront Daganzord and his pursuit of the Grantrois, a powerful sealing stone originally belonging to his father. While chasing the thief Nanbuuko to recover this artifact, Hiiro gains companions, including a mysterious magic-wielding girl named Saraato. His primary antagonist becomes Nanbuuko, who ultimately fuses with the evil dragon Daganzord.

In terms of abilities, Hiiro possesses an intriguing contradiction. While his skill with a sword is almost non-existent after a decade of training, he compensates with an exceptional natural physical strength and a hidden, immense magical potential that surprises even accomplished mages like Teo. His most notable power, however, is a volatile and uncontrollable transformation. When subjected to extreme emotions such as intense anger or fear, Hiiro loses his humanity and enters a draconic state, becoming a being focused solely on annihilating his opponent. This state, which he cannot consciously control, is a direct consequence of sharing his heart with Daganzord.

Throughout his journey, Hiiro’s development is slow but defined by key moments of crisis. His initial path is hampered by his own arrogance, naivety, and inexperience. He is forced to rely heavily on Giruu and his other companions to survive. It is not until the final confrontation, when Nanbuuko attacks Saraato, that Hiiro experiences a profound emotional awakening. This moment of desperate determination unlocks his true potential, allowing him to overcome his limits and finally defeat his fused enemy. This final battle represents the culmination of his growth, where his desire to protect others temporarily supersedes his selfish need for revenge, allowing him to access the power he had been seeking all along.
