TV-Series
Description
Kenji Mitsuura is the founder of the Awakening Lab, an organization dedicated to researching and unlocking psychic abilities in普通人. Physically, he is a tall man with an orange afro hairstyle, a goatee, and small eyes. He typically wears a checkered red-and-white blazer with a dark red shirt featuring eye imagery.
Born into a wealthy family, Mitsuura is not motivated by money or social advancement. His primary driving force is a deep, personal desire to "become someone" and to attain psychic powers for himself. This ambition led him to use his family's resources to establish the Awakening Lab, where he houses and studies several young espers. His personality is friendly, optimistic, and sociable, though he is also notably eccentric in his single-minded pursuit of the supernatural.
In the story, Mitsuura first encounters Ritsu Kageyama, mistaking him for his brother Mob. He invites Ritsu to the Awakening Lab, hoping to help him develop his potential. During Ritsu's visit, Mitsuura explains his dream of becoming an esper, a confession that Ritsu finds foolish but also sympathizes with. When Ritsu later displays his powers, Mitsuura is initially impressed but becomes disturbed as Ritsu's personality takes a darker, more malicious turn. When the terrorist organization Claw attacks the Awakening Lab, Mitsuura is knocked unconscious, and the young espers under his care are kidnapped. This event leaves him distraught over his inability to protect them, revealing his genuine care for the children. Later, during the battle against Claw's leader, he provides a safe location for allies to hide from the enemy.
Mitsuura maintains a cordial and supportive relationship with the esper children at his lab, including Takeshi Hoshino, Go Asahi, and Rei Kurosaki. His interactions with Ritsu form a key part of his role, as his facility becomes a catalyst for Ritsu's own psychic awakening. Ultimately, Kenji Mitsuura is a character defined by the gap between his grand aspirations and his ordinary human limitations. Despite his immense wealth and dedication, he possesses no psychic abilities of his own. His development comes through his realization of the dangers his research attracts and his genuine distress at the harm that comes to the children in his care, showing that his motivations, while born from personal desire, are not entirely selfish.
