Description
Dimple is a green, wispy, cloud-like spirit who serves as a central figure in the narrative, initially as an antagonist before evolving into a complex, morally ambiguous ally. His physical form is distinctive and cartoonish, resembling a floating puff of smoke with a surprisingly detailed human-like face featuring prominent lips and a nose. The most recognizable features are the two permanent, rosy red circles on his cheeks, a trait that transfers to any human he possesses as a visual cue for the audience. While usually a small, insubstantial cloud, he can exert his spiritual power to transform into a larger, more muscular humanoid form, often referred to as his full-power state, where he appears as a tall, bald, muscular green entity.
His driving motivation is an immense and egotistical ambition to become a god, worshipped by all of humanity. This goal defines his actions for much of the story. Introduced as a self-proclaimed "upper-class evil spirit" and the former leader of a cult, he initially sees Shigeo "Mob" Kageyama only as a vessel to steal for his immense psychic power. However, after being decisively defeated by Mob, he adopts a new strategy, choosing to linger around him and feign loyalty while secretly waiting for an opportunity to take over his body. This marked the beginning of a long and complicated partnership where his role in the story shifts from a clear-cut villain to a scheming, often cynical, but surprisingly loyal companion. He frequently acts as a voice of pragmatic, if sometimes shady, common sense, contrasting with Mob's naive sincerity.
Over time, Dimple's genuine relationships begin to compete with his selfish desires. His primary connection is with Mob himself, who treats the scheming spirit with an unguarded sincerity that slowly chips away at Dimple's purely self-serving nature. He also develops a strong bond with Arataka Reigen, Mob's con-man mentor, with the two often forming a comedic duo of cynical adults trying to manage Mob's extraordinary life. He forges a significant, though initially manipulative, bond with Mob's younger brother, Ritsu, helping him awaken his own psychic powers while secretly hoping to exploit them. These connections are put to the ultimate test in the final arc, where Dimple finally achieves his dream of godhood by creating a massive sentient broccoli, the Divine Tree, and using its power to brainwash the citizens of Spice City into worshipping him.
His character development reaches its peak during this conflict. Faced with the choice between realizing his lifelong ambition of being a god or saving Mob, who refuses to fight him, Dimple makes a selfless decision. He abandons his divine power and his followers, sacrificing his godhood to rescue his friend, acknowledging that Mob's selflessness had influenced him to the point where his own selfish reason for existing was disappearing. In a final act of heroism, he battles against his own creation to protect Mob, leading to his apparent destruction. This act completes his transformation from a purely evil spirit into a true, if deeply flawed, friend.
As a spirit, Dimple possesses a wide array of abilities, making him one of the most formidable characters in the series. His core powers include flight, invisibility to non-espers, incorporeality, and possession. When possessing a person, he can utilize their body to its full physical potential and access any latent psychic abilities they might have. He is also a master of mass hypnosis, able to project his will to manipulate the emotions and actions of large crowds simultaneously. In his powered-up states, he can regenerate from significant damage, transform his body into weapons like blades, and unleash powerful energy attacks such as the Wraither Beam, a concentrated laser fired from his mouth. In his final "God Dimple" form, empowered by the Divine Tree, his abilities are magnified to an enormous scale, granting him super strength, high-speed flight, nigh-invulnerability, and control over the tree's plant-based appendages for combat.
