Description
Hikari Karibuchi is a fourteen-year-old witch who hails from Sasebo in Fuso and serves as a sergeant in the 502nd Joint Fighter Wing, also known as the Brave Witches. Her motivation stems from a deep admiration for her older sister, Takami Karibuchi, a celebrated veteran witch in the Fuso Navy. Inspired by her sibling’s example, Hikari enrolled in the Sasebo Navy Military School to begin her own path as an aerial witch. When an opportunity arose to reinforce the front lines in Europe, she volunteered, leaving her home country on the same naval carrier that was transporting her sister to her new post. However, a sudden Neuroi attack during the voyage gravely injured Takami, forcing her into a coma and leaving the 502nd without its assigned member. To resolve the situation, the squadron’s commander, Gundula Rall, discreetly incorporated Hikari into the unit. She was initially disguised as her unconscious sister to maintain operational security and officially joined as a new member of the Wing.

Personality-wise, Hikari is defined by an unwavering determination and a fundamentally optimistic nature. She is good-hearted and easily impressed by the skills of her colleagues, often trying to cheer them up when they are feeling low. A significant part of her internal struggle is her desire to prove herself as a capable witch in her own right, as she often feels she lives in the shadow of her sister’s reputation. This drive makes her stubborn and occasionally impulsive, leading her to push herself past her limits when given criticism or told that something is impossible. While this recklessness can sometimes be a detriment, her bullheaded persistence also enables her to discover creative solutions and turn the tide of battle in her team’s favor.

In terms of abilities, Hikari possesses an unusual set of traits that distinguish her from her peers. Her most notable skill is raw physical stamina, as she can outrun even well-trained adult naval soldiers. However, her magical proficiency initially lags far behind the squadron average. Early on, she struggles with basic tasks such as maintaining stable flight with her striker unit or walking on water, which requires significant magical output. Her unique magical talent is known as the Contact Eye. Unlike the standard magical eye used by other witches to locate an enemy’s weak point at a distance, Hikari’s ability only activates when she makes direct physical contact with a Neuroi. Upon touching the enemy, she gains an X-ray-like vision that accurately pinpoints the location of the enemy’s core. Due to the extreme danger of getting close to a Neuroi, the use of this ability is generally restricted.

Throughout her time with the 502nd, Hikari undergoes rigorous training to overcome her magical shortcomings. Under the instruction of Edytha Rossmann, she is set to a difficult test that requires climbing a tall pillar using only her magic. After days of failure, she learns to redirect her magical flow to her hands, achieving success and dramatically improving her control over her striker unit. While her magical capacity remains below average compared to her comrades, her keen physical stamina and quick thinking allow her to contribute meaningfully to missions. Her signature weapon loadout typically includes a Type 99 machine gun, and she has also utilized an S-18 anti-materiel rifle and an improvised arsenal of explosive arrows.

Hikari’s key relationships are central to her development. Her bond with her sister, Takami, serves as the primary emotional anchor of her journey. Initially, she is the insecure substitute trying to fill her sister’s shoes, but by the time Takami recovers and returns to the squadron, Hikari has grown enough to stand alongside her as an equal, having forged her own identity as a witch. Her relationship with Naoe Kanno, a close friend of her sister, starts contentiously. Kanno resents Hikari’s presence and doubts her competence, seeing her as the weaker opposite of Takami. Through relentless effort and shared combat missions, Hikari earns Kanno’s grudging respect, and they become a solid combat partnership. Her role in the story is therefore one of perseverance; she is the rookie who must use a combination of raw stamina, stubborn courage, and a dangerous unique power to find her place among a squadron of elite witches, ultimately stepping out of her sister’s shadow to become a recognized member of the 502nd Joint Fighter Wing.
