Description
The character known as Avilio Bruno is the primary protagonist of the story, a young man originally named Angelo Lagusa. He is a victim of a traditional Sicilian crime family dispute, having witnessed the brutal murder of his father, mother, and younger brother at the hands of the Vanetti family when he was a child. Following this traumatic event, he was forced to flee his hometown of Lawless and survive on his own for seven years.

In terms of appearance, Angelo is a young man of above-average height with a thin build. He has short black hair and hazel eyes, though his gaze is frequently described as distant, monotonous, and even unsettling, making it difficult for others to tell if he is alive or dead. As his stress and the weight of his mission increase over the course of the story, dark circles appear under his eyes. He typically dresses in a simple, understated manner, often wearing a white shirt with black suspenders and a cap or beret.

Angelo’s personality is defined by a profound and traumatic shift. As a young boy, he was described as brave, sweet, and deeply empathetic, especially towards his younger brother and his friend Corteo. He cared for his family immensely. After their murder, he felt utterly alone and miserable, even expressing regret that he had not been killed alongside them. Forced into a life of petty crime to survive, he grew into a cold, cynical, and emotionally stunted man. He rarely expresses his feelings freely, maintaining a neutral and calculating demeanor. While this exterior makes him appear detached, his actions are driven by a singular, all-consuming purpose: revenge. He confesses that without this goal, he would have no reason to live.

His primary motivation is the systematic destruction of the Vanetti family, specifically the men he holds responsible for the murder of his family. This quest for vengeance is reignited after he receives an anonymous letter, purportedly from a friend of his father, which lists the names of the killers. This prompts him to return to Lawless under the assumed name Avilio Bruno to infiltrate the mafia and exact his retribution. His role in the story is that of the avenger, an agent of chaos who methodically ingratiates himself with his enemies to manipulate them from within. He is the catalyst for a brutal internal war within the Vanetti family, masterfully orchestrating conflicts and betrayals to achieve his goal.

Key relationships define and complicate his path. His most significant and complex relationship is with Nero Vanetti, the son of the don who ordered the hit on Angelo’s family. Avilio befriends Nero as a calculated step to get close to his father, Vincent, and intends to kill them both. However, as they work together, a genuine bond of friendship forms, creating a deep internal conflict for Avilio. Nero, in turn, comes to trust Avilio completely and sees him as a real brother, often defending him against accusations. This emotional entanglement ultimately prevents Avilio from killing Nero in the end, despite it being his original plan. In stark contrast stands Corteo, Avilio’s childhood best friend. Corteo represents the innocence and goodness of Avilio’s past. Avilio feels a strong need to protect him, viewing him as a brother. Their relationship becomes a source of immense stress for Avilio, and the tragic circumstances surrounding Corteo’s death contribute heavily to the character’s ultimate emotional devastation and emptiness.

Throughout the story, Avilio undergoes a profound but bleak development. He begins as a traumatized child and transforms into a cold, ruthless, and highly effective instrument of revenge. He is willing to do anything, including manipulating friends and allies, to see his plan through. However, after successfully eliminating all of his targets and dismantling the Vanetti family, he does not find the peace or satisfaction he expected. Instead, he admits to Nero that he feels nothing but emptiness, believing his revenge was not worth the cost. This realization leaves him hollow, having sacrificed his humanity and his closest friend for a goal that ultimately failed to fill the void left by his family.

Despite his emotional turmoil, Avilio possesses several notable abilities that make him a formidable figure. He is a master manipulator, capable of thinking up and executing complex plans that pit his enemies against each other. He is exceptionally skilled at pickpocketing, a talent he developed during his years of surviving alone on the streets. He is also proficient with both firearms, particularly a pistol, and bladed weapons. However, he is noted to have a distinct weakness, as he is reportedly terrible at driving a car. In his personal life, he has a strong preference for sweet things, often adding excessive sugar to his coffee and enjoying canned pineapple.
