Description
Olmine, also romanized as Olminu, is a young magician who belongs to the Octobrist Organization, a group of native human magicians dedicated to observing the Drifters and supporting their fight against the Ends. Her codename within the organization is Shem. She is a relatively young woman with an athletic build, long hair styled into two tails, blue eyes, and spectacles, and she wears the standard uniform of the Octobrists. Her exact origins are not fully explained in the story, which leaves her early history somewhat mysterious, but from her introduction she serves as a field agent assigned to watch over the group of Drifters led by Toyohisa Shimazu.
In personality, Olmine comes across as skittish and serious, and she is genuinely afraid of the Drifters she is ordered to observe, because their willingness to throw away their own lives and their casual attitude toward death are foreign and unsettling to her. At the same time, she is drawn to their bold ambition, particularly their plan to seize entire countries, which fascinates her even as it frightens her. She is also an informative presence, knowledgeable about the Drifters, the Ends, and the wider state of the world, and she can keep a surprisingly cool head during battle, as shown in her encounter with Joan of Arc. Her conscience causes her visible conflict, because the talisman magic she learned in order to protect people is being used to kill in wartime, and she struggles to reconcile her ethics with the violence around her.
Her role in the story begins when she is discovered and captured by Toyohisa's group while trying to follow them. Once taken in, she explains the nature of the Drifters and the Offscourings to the group and becomes an assistant and liaison for them. Her practical knowledge of geography, politics, and the Drifters' situation makes her a valuable guide, and she also relays information between the group and her superiors through a crystal ball that allows communication over great distances.
Olmine's key relationships are with the Drifters' group and her fellow Octobrists. Her teacher is Abe no Haruakira, also known as Abe no Seimei, the head of the organization, from whom she has learned her talisman magic; his regard for her is reflected in his remark that her stone wall technique, along with her physical attributes, is the finest of the age. She works alongside the archer Nasu Suketaka Yoichi, who fixes her talismans in place with arrows during a critical siege, and she interacts regularly with Oda Nobunaga, who gives her a series of teasing nicknames based on her appearance. Similar nicknames are used by other members of the organization, and she has largely resigned herself to them.
As a magician, Olmine is still a novice, and her abilities are limited. Her main skill is a talisman-based spell that summons stone walls, which she uses repeatedly to support the Drifters in battle, at one point creating stepped stone slabs against a castle wall as part of a plan devised by Hannibal and Nobunaga. Although her power is narrow compared with that of more accomplished mages, her quick thinking and composure in combat make her a dependable support.
Her development in the story is gradual. She begins as a timid observer who is terrified of the people she is watching, then becomes a cooperative companion who assists them in battle. Her internal conflict, being drawn to the Drifters' grand ambitions while troubled by their disregard for life and by the violent use of her protective magic, makes her a grounded counterweight to the extraordinary warriors around her, and she continues to grow into her role as their guide and supporter.
