Description
Blood is one of the three undead guardians who raise the protagonist, Will, in the abandoned City of the Dead. Known as the skeleton warrior among the trio, he serves as a stern yet loving father figure and the primary combat instructor for the young boy. His physical form is that of a tall, imposing skeleton, a direct consequence of the circumstances surrounding his death and subsequent resurrection. Unlike lesser undead, Blood retains his full intellect, personality, and a powerful sense of honor, a testament to the unique pact that bound him and his companions to their eternal vigil.

In his past life, Blood was a renowned and formidable warrior who, alongside the priestess Mary and the mage Gus, formed a legendary strike team. They were tasked with a desperate mission to defeat a powerful Demon Lord whose armies threatened the southern continent. During the climactic battle, Blood was meant to engage the Demon Lord directly, but the enemy was always a single step ahead, preventing a decisive victory. Though the party ultimately managed to seal the Demon Lord away, they were all mortally wounded. In that moment of desperation, the god Stagnate offered them a bargain: become powerful undead bound to guard the seal for eternity in exchange for the eradication of the demonic army. Blood accepted this grim pact. Because his body had been so severely mutilated in the battle, he rose again not as a mummy or a ghost like his companions, but as a skeleton.

Personality-wise, Blood embodies the archetype of the grizzled, experienced warrior. He is gruff and can be harsh in his teaching methods, believing that the most important lessons are often learned through direct experience and even hardship. On one occasion, he left a young Will alone in a dangerous dungeon to foster his independence and confidence. Despite his tough exterior, he possesses a deep, paternal love for Will, having dedicated two hundred years of isolated duty before the boy’s arrival gave his existence new meaning. He values honorable combat, despises cowardice and dishonorable actions, and is fiercely protective of his newfound family. This sense of honor extends to his own limits; as an undead, he is aware he can no longer grow stronger, which makes his mission to train Will all the more critical.

Blood's primary motivation throughout his undeath was to faithfully maintain the seal on the Demon Lord. This singular purpose sustained him and his companions for two centuries. However, the arrival of Will as a human infant shifted his entire worldview. The attachment he, Mary, and Gus formed to the child gradually superseded their attachment to their original duty, which ultimately allowed Stagnate to finally claim their souls. Blood's driving force becomes ensuring Will is prepared to survive in the living world, passing on his martial prowess, his powerful demon sword Overeater, and his unwavering code of conduct before his time as an undead comes to an end.

Within the story, Blood acts as a foundational pillar for Will's journey. He is responsible for all of Will's physical and combat training, shaping him into a capable warrior. The defining moment of their relationship is the final, serious duel Blood demands of Will before the boy comes of age. This fight is not a punishment but a rite of passage and a final lesson, during which Blood acknowledges Will's growth and formally bequeaths him his most treasured possession, the demon-forged sword Overeater. This act symbolizes the transfer of his will and protection to the next generation. After this, Blood fades from the physical world, his spirit finally released from its ancient pact.

Blood's key relationships form the emotional core of the first part of the narrative. His bond with Mary and Gus is that of inseparable comrades who have shared a two-hundred-year burden. While Gus often acts as the cynical and calculating counterpoint to Blood's directness, the three undead share a deep, unspoken trust. However, it is his relationship with Will that is most transformative. Will is not just a student but a surrogate son, and through him, Blood rediscovers a sense of hope and love that had been eroded by centuries of lonely duty.

Blood’s character development is tragic yet complete. He begins as a static guardian bound to a dying world, unable to grow or change as living beings do. Over the course of raising Will, he finds a new purpose that allows him to finally break his cycle of stagnation. He does not develop in the sense of changing his personality, but rather fulfills his potential by successfully passing on his legacy. His final act is not one of combat, but of acceptance and farewell, achieving a peace in death that he could not find in his long undeath.

In terms of abilities, Blood is an exceptionally powerful warrior, even by the standards of the living. His raw physical strength is immense, capable of killing an unprepared opponent in a single blow. He is a master of swordsmanship, honed over a lifetime and two centuries of practice. As a high-caliber undead created by Stagnate, he has no weakness to sunlight, never tires, never needs to sleep, and can regenerate from most wounds unless he is completely destroyed. His signature weapon, which he ultimately gifts to Will, is Overeater, a fearsome demon-forged sword that can cut through the echoes of a god and restores the health of its living wielder. However, Blood cannot use its healing property himself, and he warns Will against over-reliance on its power, as it can lead to stagnation and vulnerability against foes it cannot counter.
