Description
Minako Okukawa is a former ballerina who runs a ballet studio in the town of Hasetsu. She serves as the ballet teacher and longtime mentor of Yuuri Katsuki, the protagonist. Her background as a dancer gives her a deep understanding of body movement and discipline, which she applies to figure skating training. Minako is an energetic and outgoing person, often striking ballet poses when she becomes enthusiastic about something. She insists on manners, discipline, and proper body management, yet she also has a fondness for alcohol that sometimes makes her brash and loud, creating a contrasting mix of strictness and liveliness. Her straightforward and warm demeanor makes her something like a cool older friend in the neighborhood. She is passionate about her art and about supporting Yuuri, whom she has known since childhood. Minako played a key role in Yuuri’s early life by encouraging him to start figure skating, recognizing his potential and guiding him toward the ice rink when he was very young. She continues to offer both emotional support and artistic guidance, helping him with ballet elements that enhance his skating routines. In the story, Minako acts as a grounding presence in Yuuri’s hometown, representing his roots and the community that believes in him. Her own motivation is partly tied to the decline in youth in Hasetsu, which threatens her ballet studio, so she is invested in keeping Yuuri motivated and successful. Her notable abilities include her expertise in ballet technique and her ability to choreograph and refine movement, which she uses to assist Yuuri’s training. While she does not undergo major personal change over the course of the series, her consistent loyalty and care highlight the importance of long‑standing relationships in Yuuri’s journey.
