Description
Qi is a supporting character in the anime and web manga Nanbaka. He is a 25-year-old Chinese man and a former member of the Chinese Mafia who now serves as an inmate at Nanba Prison, where he is held in cell eight of building five under inmate number 71. In appearance, he has short light-gray hair and gray eyes, stands about 1.92 meters tall, and weighs around 83 kilograms. Before his imprisonment, he worked as a herbal pharmacist, a background that defines much of his role in the story.
Qi is extremely laid-back and lazy, often spending his time napping and claiming that he is not suited for strenuous activities such as fighting in prison tournaments. His easygoing demeanor leads both friends and strangers to frequently call him a loser. Beneath this frivolous and apathetic exterior, however, he possesses a subtle sense of justice and a warm, compassionate nature, particularly toward the people he shares his life with in prison. He cares deeply about his cellmates and is willing to go to great lengths to protect them, even at his own expense. On one occasion, he feigned betraying his friends in the hope of shielding them from harm, a decision that others interpreted as reckless and reflective of a lack of self-preservation and a disregard for what the people he cared about actually wanted.
His motivation centers largely on the safety and wellbeing of his close companions, and he tends to act selflessly even when his actions are misunderstood. In the prison setting, he is a dependable presence within his cell group, offering his expertise and quiet support during crises rather than taking center stage in physical confrontations. His most significant relationships are with his cellmates, including Liang, Upa, and Inori Hakkai, and he is also deeply grateful to the guard Samon, who once believed in his testimony regarding a case involving a poison that could not be detected. Qi respects Samon greatly for that trust and sees him as someone who could help Liang and Upa begin new lives.
Qi's most notable abilities stem from his pharmaceutical training. He has immense knowledge of plants, drugs, and poisons and is a skilled pharmaceutical chemist, capable of creating both powerful poisons and effective medicines using natural ingredients such as wildflowers. Although he outwardly projects laziness, his expertise plays a meaningful part in the events of the story, and his development reveals a character who is far more loyal and self-sacrificing than his idle exterior initially suggests.
