Description
Jūgo, also known as Inmate Number 1315, is the central character of Nanbaka's narrative. He is a sixteen-year-old prisoner with a slim build, standing at 169 centimeters tall and weighing 51 kilograms. He is of Japanese descent and has a distinctive appearance, featuring black hair with red streaks at the ends and heterochromia, meaning his left eye is green and his right eye is violet.

His background is highly unusual, as he was born within a prison to incarcerated parents. He possesses an almost supernatural talent for unlocking any mechanism or electronic lock, a skill that has allowed him to break out of every prison he has ever been sent to. The sole exceptions to this ability are the mysterious black shackles that encircle his neck, wrists, and ankles. These restraints appeared on him while he was asleep, placed there by an enigmatic figure known only as the Man With The Scar, who was conducting experiments on inmates.

Jūgo's personality is generally cheerful, confident, and impulsive. He is prone to boredom, which often drives his actions, including his many escape attempts. However, beneath this lighthearted exterior lies a more serious and determined individual. His primary motivation is to find the Man With The Scar and force him to remove the unbreakable shackles. This quest for freedom and answers is the core driver of his personal journey.

In the story, Jūgo is assigned to Building 13, Cell 13 of Nanba Prison. His role is that of the catalyst, his constant scheming and escapes forming the basis of many of the series' events. His relationships with his three cellmates—Uno, Rock, and Nico—are central to his character. The bond he shares with them is his most cherished possession. He has a history with each; for example, he saved Rock from starving to death and freed Nico from a life of painful medical experimentation, giving him a new interest in life. In return, his friends are intensely loyal to him, with Uno stating that Jūgo gave him his freedom back. Nothing matters more to Jūgo than the well-being of these three individuals.

Throughout the series, Jūgo undergoes significant development, particularly regarding the power that accompanies his shackles. The Man With The Scar's experiments left him with a "gift": the ability to activate a dangerous alternate form. He harbors a deep fear and dislike of this transformation because, when it occurs, he loses control and often hurts the people around him. His struggle to control or avoid this form adds a layer of tension to his character. His hatred for the guard who shackled him is profound, a feeling that stems from the curse these restraints represent.

Jūgo's notable abilities are primarily his unparalleled lock-picking prowess, which extends to all mechanical and electronic locks, and the mysterious, unbreakable shackles he wears. These restraints are seemingly impervious to any form of damage. Furthermore, they are connected to his secondary, more dangerous ability: the transformation into a violent and uncontrolled state. He avoids using this power at all costs, as it is a direct link to his traumatic past and a threat to the safety of those he cares for.
