Description
Kazuma Hiyama is a central male character in the sixth-grade class, initially presenting as a delinquent-like prankster with a tendency for rash speaking. His chalky brown hair and dark purple eyes distinguish his physical appearance, and his hair reaches approximately ear-length.

His background reveals a more sensitive origin to his behavior. In fifth grade, Kazuma entered the classroom to find Yui Aoi crying over a Mother's Day picture, as her mother was absent from her life. After learning from a classmate that discussing her mother was forbidden, he later saw Yui smiling and laughing with friends. This prompted confusion and frustration in Kazuma, who felt she should not be smiling while hiding such sadness. He confronted her and told her to stop smiling, which led to Yui becoming angry and developing a dislike for him.

Despite her animosity, Kazuma's feelings for Yui persisted, but he covered his crush by teasing her and leading a group of three boys in foolish antics designed to rile her up. This behavior establishes his early personality as someone who struggles to express genuine affection directly, instead using provocation as a shield. His actions mark him as a troublemaker within Class 6-2, earning him a reputation as a rash speaker and prankster.

The turning point for Kazuma occurs when he helps Yui recover a precious item she lost, specifically a necklace containing a key that belonged to her late mother. This act reveals the soft side he typically conceals and demonstrates underlying kindness and dedication. Following this incident, he confesses his feelings to Yui, and she reciprocates, leading them to become the second couple in their class after the pair of Hanabi Ayase and Yuuto Takao.

His relationship with Yui Aoi stands as the most significant in his character arc. Once they begin dating, Kazuma undergoes a notable transformation. He sheds his troublemaker persona and becomes much nicer, more considerate, and very protective of Yui. The teasing and foolish antics cease as he grows into a more caring boyfriend. His motivations center on his affection for Yui, which initially manifested through misguided attention-seeking but eventually matures into sincere emotional support.

Beyond his romantic relationship, Kazuma interacts with a group of similarly mischievous boys, including friends named Eikou and Tomoya, with whom he previously engaged in teasing and popularity rankings before his personal growth. His background also notes that his mother is unknown, a detail that parallels the absence he recognized in Yui's family situation.

Kazuma's development throughout the series focuses on his transition from an immature boy who expresses interest through antagonism to a more emotionally open and protective individual. His ability to change his behavior after acknowledging his true feelings marks his primary growth, as he learns to replace provocation with genuine care. The necklace incident serves as the catalyst for this change, allowing his hidden softer nature to emerge fully.
