Description
Katsutoshi Nakazawa serves as the head coach of the Seiseki High School soccer club. His birthday is on August 10. He is a former member of the Seiseki soccer team, though his own playing career was unremarkable; over three years as a student player, he only managed to sit on the bench once. After his playing days, he was assisting the previous coach when he was asked to take over the position based on that coach's recommendation. Off the field, Nakazawa is divorced, and his ex-wife is named Junko. Despite the end of their marriage, his favorite food remains Junko's home-cooked meals.

In terms of personality, Nakazawa is defined by his humility and open-mindedness. He is acutely aware of his own shortcomings as a coach, admitting that he initially knew almost nothing about soccer. Rather than letting this be a weakness, he demonstrates great trust in those around him. He relies heavily on the team's female manager, Chikako Ubukata, adopting the tactical suggestions she develops. He is also willing to listen to and incorporate ideas from the players themselves, showing a flexible and inclusive approach to leadership. This easygoing but wise nature has earned him the nickname Hige, or Beard, from his players, referencing his distinctive goatee.

His primary motivation is the growth and success of his team, which he fosters through a unique coaching philosophy. Instead of giving direct, specific instructions, Nakazawa prefers to let the players think for themselves on the field. He believes that learning from their own failures and mistakes is a crucial part of their development. This approach encourages a self-reliant and thoughtful attitude among the Seiseki players. Another key aspect of his role in the story is his effort in recruiting talented players. A significant achievement attributed to his hard work and persuasion is securing the transfer of Yuta Usui, a player who had attracted the attention of many scouts from other schools.

His development as a character is closely tied to his growing confidence and effectiveness as a coach. While he begins from a place of admitted ignorance, his wisdom lies in knowing how to leverage the expertise of others, like the manager Ubukata. He is not afraid to make difficult or unpopular decisions if he believes they are for the long-term benefit of a player or the team. This includes making tough calls about the lineup, such as keeping talented players on the bench or pushing others to compete in challenging positions, even when they seem outmatched. His notable ability is not a physical skill, but his talent for recognizing a player's hidden potential. He has a keen eye for seeing what raw players like Tsukushi Tsukamoto could become, and understanding how to push more experienced players to new levels.
