Description
Petelgeuse Romanée-Conti is a central antagonist in Re:Zero, known within the story as the Sin Archbishop of Sloth in the Witch Cult. Before taking that title, he was an earth spirit named Geuse who had lived for more than four hundred years and was one of the founding members of the cult. In his earlier centuries he was described as calm, gentle, and rational. He lived among the elves of Elior Forest, cared for their community, and formed a family-like attachment to a woman named Fortuna and her young niece Emilia, whom he saw as a living miracle and protected like a daughter.

The catastrophe that changed him began when Regulus Corneas and the Witch of Vainglory, Pandora, attacked the forest. To defend the people he loved, Geuse forcibly absorbed the Witch Factor of Sloth, a power that broke his mind instead of saving them. Pandora then manipulated him into killing Fortuna with his own hands, and this act completed his collapse into madness. He abandoned his old identity and became Petelgeuse Romanée-Conti, the deranged Archbishop of Sloth.

In his corrupted state, Petelgeuse is erratic and fanatical. He has short dark green hair, emotionless insect-like eyes, and a thin frame, and he moves in strange ways, tilting his neck and bending his waist, sometimes biting his own fingers until they bleed. He speaks in a polite, precise manner and insists on the values of diligence and love. For him, diligence is the greatest virtue and sloth the greatest sin, and he considers himself the most diligent servant of the Witch of Envy, Satella. His devotion to Satella is stronger than that of the other archbishops, and he believes every violent act is proof of his love. His behavior is shaped entirely by faith rather than ordinary morality, making him unpredictable and frightful to those who encounter him.

His motivation is to earn Satella's affection by carrying out the instructions in the Gospel, the Witch Cult's book of prophecy, more zealously than anyone else. This drive leads him to become one of the most destructive and active members of the cult. In the third arc of the story, he leads an assault on the Mathers territory, hunting Emilia and attacking the mansion, forcing the protagonist Subaru Natsuki into a series of deadly confrontations. Petelgeuse sees Subaru as an obstacle and a heretic, but also as a potential vessel because of Subaru's mysterious connection to Satella.

His main weapon is the Authority of Sloth, which manifests as Unseen Hands, invisible dark arms that can grasp, crush, and throw people without being perceived by most. Because he is a spirit, he can also abandon a damaged body and possess the bodies of his followers, known as Fingers, allowing him to keep fighting after his host is killed. This makes him extremely difficult to destroy permanently. He is finally defeated when Subaru, with the help of allies, disables his Fingers and kills him with a carriage wheel, ending his physical existence.

The character's development is tragic. His genuine kindness was not erased but twisted: his diligence became obsessive, compulsive activity, his love for the Witch became fanaticism, and his desire to protect turned into murder. Petelgeuse's memory continues to affect later parts of the story, where more of his past as Geuse comes to light, and his ties to Emilia, Fortuna, and the destruction of Elior Forest give context to his fall. In this way he functions both as a terrifying enemy and as a figure of tragedy whose madness was shaped by grief, manipulation, and unbearable loss.
