Description
Chika Homura is a first-year high school student and one of the two main protagonists of the story. She enters high school with a clear goal: to leave her past behind and reinvent herself. During her junior high years, she was a powerful and active member of the volleyball club, a time when she embraced a tomboyish lifestyle. Seeking to become a more maidenly and cute girl, she decides to join the wind instrument club and take up the flute, an instrument she believes will help her achieve this new image. Her dream is to lead the club to perform at the Fumonkan, a prestigious national tournament for wind ensembles often referred to as the Koshien of wind music.
In terms of appearance, Chika is a beautiful teenage girl characterized by her long, purple hair that reaches her waist and her bright purple eyes. Her personality is vibrant and energetic; she is portrayed as being kind, caring, and full of vivacity that proves infectious to the other members of her club. While she is not the quickest to grasp complex subjects, she is known to become determined and focused once she understands a task. A notable aspect of her personality is her defensiveness, which frequently comes to the surface when she interacts with her childhood friend, Haruta Kamijou. Despite her efforts to appear refined, she can be clumsy and her past habits sometimes break through her new persona, especially when she is provoked.
Chika's primary motivation is twofold. On the surface, she works hard to practice the flute and recruit new members to save the school's struggling wind ensemble. However, a significant driving force behind her efforts is her romantic interest in the band's new teacher and conductor, Shinjirou Kusakabe. She is determined to win his affection, which places her in direct competition with Haruta, who also confesses to having feelings for the same teacher. This shared crush creates a playful yet intense rivalry between the two childhood friends, rekindling their relationship as they try to outdo each other for Kusakabe's attention.
Chika's role in the story is multifaceted. She acts as the emotional heart and a catalyst for the wind instrument club. Her energetic and passionate nature helps to energize other members and push the group forward, even during difficult moments. While her partner Haruta takes on the role of the genius detective who solves the various mysteries that arise, Chika often serves as his companion and foil. Her observations, though sometimes seemingly simple, can provide the crucial spark that helps Haruta reach his conclusions. She is also the primary character through which the audience experiences the club's growth, starting as a true beginner flutist and gradually improving through dedicated, often off-screen, practice.
Her key relationships define much of her journey. The most central is her dynamic with Haruta Kamijou. As former neighbors, she has known him since childhood, and she used to bully him by eating his snacks and putting frogs down his back. In high school, their relationship evolves into a complex partnership of rivalry and friendship, where they bicker constantly but work together seamlessly for the sake of the club. Another crucial relationship is with Shinjirou Kusakabe, her music teacher and object of her affection, for whom she is trying to become a more refined girl. She also forms bonds with the other members of the band, such as Naoko Serizawa and Maren Sei, often taking a persistent and caring approach to befriend them and help them overcome their personal struggles.
As the story progresses, Chika undergoes notable development. Her transformation is not marked by a single dramatic event but happens organically. While her initial goal is to become a stereotypical cute girl for the sake of a crush, her experiences in the band club deepen her character. She becomes more invested in the well-being of her friends and the collective success of the ensemble, growing beyond her superficial motivations. Her persistence and cheerful disposition, rather than her attempts at being demure, become her defining strengths as she learns to balance her past self with the person she wants to become. Her abilities are primarily centered on her athleticism from her volleyball days and her increasing skill as a flutist. While she does not possess the same deductive genius as Haruta, her greatest ability is her social intuition and her power to connect with and inspire others through her genuine enthusiasm and care.
