Description
Haruhiko Ichijo is the main protagonist and a first-year high school student at Hosea Academy who is deeply passionate about reading and possesses a unique artistic ability to combat supernatural beings. He is easily identified by his dark green hair, which features a distinctive piece that stands up, and his blue eyes. He is fifteen years old and carries a sketchbook with him at all times, which he uses to draw the creatures he encounters.

Known for his intellectual and kind nature, Haruhiko is a genuine bookworm who has accumulated an immense amount of knowledge from reading everything in the school library as well as the extensive collection in his own home. While this knowledge often proves reliable for solving problems and understanding the phantoms the team faces, he has a tendency to share random and seemingly useless trivia, a habit that his teammates find exasperating and have nicknamed unfortunate knowledge. Despite his academic intelligence, he can be somewhat oblivious to social cues, particularly regarding the romantic interest that several girls in his group show toward him. He also has a habit of speaking passionately about subjects and standing very close to the person he is talking to, which occasionally makes others uncomfortable. Physically, he is not particularly athletic or strong, which contrasts sharply with the more battle-ready members of his team.

Haruhiko lives alone, as his parents are separated. His mother left the family because she could not stand living with his father any longer, and his father is largely absent, seemingly focused on work and only providing for Haruhiko's living expenses. Despite this abandonment, Haruhiko holds onto a quiet hope that his family might be reunited someday. He carries a bag that was a gift from his missing mother, indicating he still holds onto that connection.

In his role within the story, Haruhiko is a member of Team E in the Neural Error Corrections Club at his academy, an organization that handles requests to deal with phantoms. At the start, his team has a poor performance record, and he works to improve their standing alongside his senior partner, Mai Kawakami. His primary motivation is to effectively deal with phantoms, drawing on his vast knowledge to overcome difficult situations, though he also deeply values the relationships he forms with his teammates.

Haruhiko maintains several significant relationships. He works closely with Mai Kawakami, a senior he looks up to and calls Mai-senpai; they have a strong, trusting bond, and he becomes fiercely serious and protective whenever her safety is at risk. He also has a complicated but caring dynamic with Reina Izumi, which often begins with him accidentally embarrassing her and ends with her physically throwing him, though they eventually grow closer and call each other by their first names. He is also instrumental in helping the more isolated Koito Minase become more social, finding her interesting and persistently helping her despite her cold demeanor, which eventually earns her gratitude and friendship. His small phantom partner, Ruru, is almost always perched on his head or shoulder; while he finds her cheerful and mischievous personality annoying at times, he is genuinely happy to have her around to combat his loneliness, and he becomes very distressed when he believes she is in danger. He also acts as a caring older brother figure to the younger elementary school student Kurumi Kumamakura, who looks up to him. Outside of his immediate team, he is close friends with his classmate Shosuke Morohashi, and they often eat lunch together.

Throughout the series, Haruhiko undergoes noticeable development. He learns to master his abilities, achieving a significant upgrade when he discovers how to summon phantoms without the use of his sketchbook. His deepest emotional struggles are explored in relation to his family, particularly when his mother returns only to be possessed by a powerful phantom, forcing him to confront his feelings of abandonment. By the end of the story, after temporarily losing his powers, he experiences a final growth in strength, becoming one of the most powerful individuals in his world.

Haruhiko’s notable ability is directly tied to his love of drawing. He can seal malevolent phantoms by sketching them into his sketchbook. Conversely, he can also summon friendly phantoms that he has drawn to fight on his behalf. His primary summoned creatures are Marchosias, who appears as a small, winged puppy rather than a terrifying hellhound, and Cthulhu, who appears as a pink, cute octopus instead of an eldritch horror. Despite their adorable appearances, they are formidable fighters capable of defeating powerful enemies. A significant weakness of his power is that if his sketchbook is taken away, he is left completely vulnerable.
