TV-Series
Description
Mai Kawakami is a central character and one of the main heroines, appearing as a 16-year-old second-year student at Hosea Academy. She stands at a height of 168 centimeters with a curvy, athletic build and long sandy blonde hair, which she typically ties into a side ponytail with a large blue ribbon. She has purple eyes with a distinctive beauty mark situated underneath each one. Her heritage is a mix, as she is one-quarter Japanese.

Mai possesses a lively, upbeat, and headstrong personality. She is highly confident in her physical skills and is very straightforward, often acting on instinct before fully thinking a situation through, which has led to her being described as someone whose body moves before her head. Despite this daring nature, she is also notably kind, caring, and protective of her friends, a trait that has earned her the nickname the Phantom-Hunting Mom. She is supportive and understanding, but she dislikes selfish or rude individuals. Even though she lives alone, she remains cheerful and acts as a big sister figure to her younger teammates.

Her primary motivation for hunting phantoms is partly financial, as she lives independently and supports herself through high school using the compensation she receives from the countermeasures office for completed jobs. She is also driven by a desire to protect others, often taking on opponents she believes she can handle alone to avoid putting her friends in danger. She relates to her partner Haruhiko due to their similar pasts and a shared sense of loneliness from growing up.

In the story, Mai is the leader of Team E, a group of special-ability users within the brain function error countermeasures office at her school. At the beginning of the series, she and her teammate Haruhiko Ichijo are the only members of the team, struggling to make a name for themselves before being joined by other characters like Reina Izumi and Koito Minase.

Her key relationships define much of her role. She shares a very close bond with Haruhiko, who is her original partner. She enjoys teasing him for his lack of physical stamina but deeply trusts and cares for him, showing signs of jealousy when other girls get close to him. For his part, Haruhiko becomes fiercely protective when she is in danger. She initially did not get along well with Koito Minase due to Koito's cool and distant attitude, but their relationship improves after they work together during an incident, and they become friends. She is also very caring toward the younger Reina Izumi, acting as a protective older sister. A humorous aspect of her background involves two girl phantoms she befriended as a child; while Mai remembers herself as shy and the phantoms as playmates, the truth is that a young, energetic Mai would relentlessly practice her martial arts techniques on them, leading the phantoms to seek revenge years later.

Throughout the series, Mai shows development in her fighting style and in her personal connections. While she is initially presented as a lone wolf who is self-sufficient, her experiences with her expanding team help her appreciate the value of relying on others. Her abilities, known as the Spirit of the Five Elements, are based on the Chinese five element philosophy of fire, water, earth, wood, and metal, which complements her practice of a form of kempo. To activate her power, she must touch a specific area of her body associated with an element, such as her heart for fire or her kidneys for water, channeling that element into her fists and feet for close-quarters combat. She is also highly physically capable without her powers, able to jump great heights and land powerful kicks. As the story progresses, she learns to create new techniques, such as forming an energy barrier and firing projectile attacks, and develops the ability to activate her powers from a fighting stance without needing to touch her body parts directly, though this method is somewhat weaker.
