Description
Chihiro Ayasato, also known as Mia Fey, is a defense attorney and a central figure in the Ace Attorney franchise. Born in 1989, she is the eldest daughter of the Fey clan, a family renowned for their tradition of spirit channeling in Kurain Village. She has a younger sister named Mayoi Ayasato, also known as Maya Fey, to whom she is very close.
Chihiro is defined by her intelligence, tenacity, and a strong sense of justice. She remains cool and collected under pressure, serving as a strict but caring mentor. Her core motivation stems from a troubled past. After her mother, Maiko Ayasato, disappeared following a scandal involving a spirit channeling that went wrong, Chihiro decided to leave the village and forgo her position as heir to become a lawyer. Her primary goal was to uncover the truth behind her mother's disgrace and disappearance. She was also driven to avoid the bitter rivalry for family leadership that she witnessed between her mother and aunt.
As a lawyer, Chihiro began her career at the Hoshikage Law Offices before establishing her own firm, the Ayasato Law Offices. Her role in the story is that of a mentor to the protagonist, Ryuichi Naruhodo (Phoenix Wright), whom she hires after successfully defending him in his first murder trial. She instills in him a crucial philosophy, teaching him to smile shamelessly when cornered and to reverse his thinking in times of crisis. Early in the narrative, Chihiro is murdered while investigating the corrupt executive Masaru Konaka (Redd White). Despite her death, she remains a vital presence because her sister and younger cousin, Harumi Ayasato (Pearl Fey), can channel her spirit. Through them, she frequently reappears to offer Naruhodo crucial hints and guidance during seemingly hopeless trials, often turning the tide of a case.
Chihiro’s key relationships heavily influence her actions. She shares a profound bond with her sister Maya, built on affection and a desire to protect her. As a rookie lawyer, she worked alongside and fell in love with her senior, Diego Armando, who later adopts the persona of the prosecutor Godot after being poisoned. Her first trial, defending the accused murderer Terry Fawles, ended in tragedy when her client committed suicide in the courtroom, leaving her deeply traumatized. This event, combined with the poisoning of Armando, kept her away from the courtroom for a year. She eventually found closure and returned to form by facing Dahlia Hawthorne, the culprit responsible for both the Fawles case and Armando's poisoning, in a trial that secured Naruhodo's acquittal.
Her abilities are twofold. Professionally, she is a highly skilled defense attorney with sharp legal acumen and an unwavering belief in her clients. Supernaturally, as a member of the Fey clan, she possesses the latent ability to channel spirits, though she largely abandoned this practice to pursue law. After her death, however, her spirit becomes a powerful asset, capable of being summoned to assist Naruhodo from beyond the grave. This unique circumstance makes her a character whose influence and guidance arguably grow even stronger after her untimely demise.
