Description
Meneldor, often called Menel for short, is a central figure in the narrative of The Lord of Rust Mountain arc and beyond. He is a half-elf, possessing a blend of human and elven heritage, which grants him a significantly longer lifespan than a full human while not being truly immortal like his elven ancestors. This dual lineage places him at a crossroads of identity, forcing him to eventually choose whether to live as a mortal or embrace the nearly eternal existence of the fae.

His background is one of tragedy and difficult choices. Before meeting the protagonist Will, Meneldor was a member of a village that was devastated and destroyed by a demonic attack. Driven to desperation and survival, he and the other able-bodied survivors turned to banditry, attacking a neighboring settlement in a bid to secure resources and a place to live. This act of aggression directly led to his first encounter with Will, who intervened and stopped the raid. Despite the grim circumstances that led him down this path, Meneldor is a skilled hunter and a competent fighter, which makes his turn to banditry a point of contrast; it is a desperate act from a capable individual rather than an incompetent one.

In terms of personality, Meneldor is characterized by a pragmatic and cynical worldview. He is sharp-tongued, direct, and often serves as the voice of reason or caution, contrasting sharply with Will’s more idealistic and altruistic nature. Initially, Meneldor is deeply skeptical of Will’s unwavering kindness and heroic drive, believing such selflessness to be either an act or a product of naivety and good fortune. However, through their shared trials, he comes to recognize that Will’s empathy and dedication to protecting others are genuine. This realization does not change his own pragmatic nature, but it grounds it, transforming his cynicism into a loyal and protective counsel for his friend. He frequently questions Will about practical matters like rewards and compensation, acting as a necessary check on Will’s sometimes reckless heroism.

His primary motivation evolves throughout the story. Initially, his actions are driven by survival for himself and his remaining community. After being spared and given a second chance by Will, his motivation shifts towards redemption and loyalty. He swears an undying oath of fealty to Will, feeling he owes a debt he can never fully repay. This loyalty is so profound that, knowing he will likely outlive his human friend, he pledges to watch over Will’s descendants and legacy long after Will himself has passed.

Meneldor’s role in the story is that of Will’s first true friend, closest advisor, and most steadfast companion. He functions as a supporting protagonist, using his unique skills to assist Will in combat and offering strategic counsel in their adventures. Their relationship defines much of the narrative’s emotional core, built on a fire-forged friendship that solidifies after they work together to cleanse Meneldor’s old village of the demons that destroyed it. They form a classic duo: while Will is a front-line warrior wielding swords and spears, Meneldor operates as a long-range specialist and ranger.

Key relationships for Meneldor include his bond with Will, which is the most developed in the series. He also has a connection to the forest spirits. As a half-elf, his affinity with nature and spirits is high, allowing him to wield spirit magic and act as an elementalist. This connection eventually leads to a significant development when he temporarily accepts the immense power of the King of the Forest to defeat a demonic threat. This ordeal fundamentally changes him, planting within him the potential to one day become a true King of the Forest himself, an ancient spirit that governs the natural order.

Meneldor undergoes substantial development, transforming from a desperate bandit motivated by fear to a noble hero bound by oaths of friendship and duty. The trauma of losing his village hardened him, but his partnership with Will allows him to channel that hardness into a protective strength. His character arc also deals with the theme of legacy. Being long-lived, he is acutely aware of the fleeting nature of a human’s life, and his decision to tie his fate to Will’s represents a choice to engage actively with the mortal world rather than retreat from it into the timeless existence of the elves.

His notable abilities are rooted in his elven bloodline, granting him exceptional senses of sight and hearing, making him an excellent hunter and scout. He is a master archer, wielding a Silver-string Bow, a weapon of significant power and heritage that once belonged to his ancestor, Telperion. Beyond his physical prowess, Meneldor is a skilled spiritist, capable of communing with and commanding elementals to perform magic, such as summoning a gnome’s hammer or using a web spell to trap creatures. The power he later wields as a potential Forest King elevates his abilities further, granting him authority over the paths and spirits of the forest. He is also resourceful and knowledgeable about poison, capable of using potent substances like hydra venom against his enemies.
