Description
Mangetsu Tsuburaya is a supporting character in the anime Shōwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjū. He is a Kamigata rakugo performer from Kyoto, known formally as the fourth-generation Mangetsu Tsuburaya. Before committing himself fully to the traditional storytelling stage, he attended medical school and acquired basic first aid knowledge, and he also had a stint in television as a talent and scriptwriter. He speaks with a Kansai dialect and refers to others using regional address terms such as calling Yotaro Yotaro-han.
Mangetsu is portrayed as a young man who is polite, dedicated, and serious about his craft. He maintains a friendly and approachable demeanor, but he is also forthright about his ambitions. His father is a heavyweight in the rakugo association, holding the position of association chairman, a fact that situates Mangetsu within the established hierarchy of the traditional arts world.
In the story, Mangetsu initially approaches Yakumo Yuurakutei, the eighth-generation Yukitei Yakumo, multiple times to request apprenticeship but is persistently refused. When he sees that the former gangster Yotaro is instantly accepted as Yakumo's disciple, Mangetsu becomes openly resentful and expresses his irritation. This dynamic establishes a tension between a diligent, pedigreed student from the formal system and an unconventional newcomer who bypassed traditional gatekeeping.
Despite his initial jealousy, Mangetsu undergoes a degree of development as he continues to pursue his own path in Kamigata rakugo. He remains a character who contrasts the Tokyo-based, more insular world of Yakumo with the lively and distinct tradition of Osaka-style performance. His notable background includes having studied medicine, which adds an unusual layer to his identity as a performer, and his prior television experience suggests a pragmatism about reaching audiences beyond the traditional hall.
