Description
Ren Suzugamori began as a timid youth, deeply fearful of his abusive father who demanded perfection. He discovered refuge in a card shop run by Tetsu Shinjou's family, where he encountered Vanguard. Early matches against the undefeated Toshiki Kai ignited intense admiration. Ren idolized Kai's strength, challenging him repeatedly despite constant defeat. During these battles, Ren started hearing the voices of his cards, predicting outcomes—an early sign of PSYqualia. This power warped his personality into a sadistic and obsessive state, alarming both Kai and Tetsu. Kai ultimately distanced himself, repulsed by Ren's transformation.

Driven by obsession and PSYqualia to surpass Kai, Ren co-founded Team Asteroid (later Foo Fighters) with Tetsu. He recruited powerful fighters like Asaka Narumi and Kyou Yahagi, enforcing a ruthless "Winners get all, losers get nothing" rule. Ren used specialized Vanguard Fight Gloves to inflict psychological pain on opponents during matches, though he remained numb due to his PSYqualia synchronizing with his units. He orchestrated card shop takeovers to dominate the scene, seeking worthy opponents to combat his boredom. He wielded a Shadow Paladin deck focused on Blaster Dark and Phantom Blaster Dragon, mastering defensive tactics to exhaust foes before overwhelming them with sacrificial offensives.

As national champion leading Team AL4, Ren seemed invincible, never losing. His PSYqualia allowed him to predetermine draws and battle outcomes, identifying Kourin's trump cards before their fight and drawing Blaster Dark at will against Kenji Mitsusada. Sensing similar potential in Aichi Sendou, Ren manipulated him into using a Shadow Paladin deck to accelerate his PSYqualia development. When Aichi resisted using the power against Team Caesar, Ren dismissed him as a failure. Suiko Tatsunagi offered Ren a contract between light and darkness; he chose darkness without hesitation, receiving Phantom Blaster Overlord. Empowered, he brutally defeated Kai, declaring their friendship ended.

In the national finals against Aichi, Ren deliberately provoked him to use PSYqualia while inflicting psychological pain through Shadow Paladin attacks. When Aichi succumbed and called Blaster Dark, Ren felt reciprocal pain. After Kai helped Aichi break free, Ren crossrode Phantom Blaster Overlord, pushing Aichi to the brink. A heal trigger forced Ren to face Majesty Lord Blaster, whose attack drained his PSYqualia, causing him to lose both the match and his power. Post-defeat, he reinstated Asaka to AL4 and acknowledged Kai with a promise to win next time. This loss triggered significant change; his PSYqualia entered dormancy, and he reverted to his original cheerful, friendly personality—though still intense during serious matches.

During the Asia Circuit, Ren formed Team New AL4 with Asaka and Kai. His Shadow Paladin deck was sealed, replaced by Gold Paladins. Though initially subdued, his PSYqualia resurfaced in Seoul against Aichi when he envisioned Spectral Duke Dragon attacking Incandescent Lion, Blond Ezel. He won using Vortimer's field-swarming and Sleygal Dagger's power boosts. Later, borrowing Tetsu's Dark Irregulars deck against Kenji, he lost to Ultimate Dimensional Robo, Great Daiyusha but remained lighthearted, joking that Dark Irregulars didn't suit him and he might try Pale Moon next. His post-PSYqualia persona included prankster tendencies, feigning his former sinister self for scares or telling ghost stories.

In later continuity, Ren became the Shadow Paladin clan leader and succeeded Kanzaki as United Sanctuary branch chief. He retained his violet vanguard circle and longer, messier hairstyle. He was among the few who remembered Aichi Sendou's disappearance and knew his location. In the "Legion Mate" arc, Ren aided the search for Aichi, possessed by Void. Additionally, Ren adopted the persona "Mask the Dark" (or "Mask the Shoulder Pads") in Vanguard -IF-, assisting the Blaster Pair as a heroic figure reminiscent of characters like Tuxedo Mask or Cat Noir.
