Description
Kenji Gion is the central protagonist of the rugby anime All Out!! and a first-year student at Kanagawa Prefectural High School. He is notably short for his age, standing at 159 centimeters (approximately 5 feet 2.5 inches) tall, a fact that has significantly shaped his identity and attitude. Having been left out of sports for most of his life due to his height, Gion carries a large competitive spirit and a powerful desire to prove that he can be just as strong as larger, more physically imposing individuals.

Gion possesses an exceptionally loud, brash, and confident personality, often speaking without thinking and forgetting his manners, which frequently irritates his upperclassmen. He has a notoriously short temper, particularly when anyone makes a remark about his small stature, a sensitivity that is heightened by the fact that he has a tall father and brother. Despite his hot-headed and confrontational nature, he is defined by a relentless passion for the sport and a refusal to back down from any challenge. His initial motivation for joining the rugby club is simple and visceral: he is charmed by the act of tackling and sees the sport as an outlet for his aggression and a way to prove his strength.

Gion's role in the story is that of the energetic, if unrefined, driving force for Kanagawa High's rugby team. He encounters rugby on the day of his high school entrance ceremony after meeting the tall and timid Sumiaki Iwashimizu. Gion strikes up a friendship with Iwashimizu and, despite having no prior experience with the sport, decides to join the club. This relationship is one of his most significant. He sees Iwashimizu as a coward due to his aversion to confrontation and often shouts at him, giving him the nickname Udo or Tree Trunk. However, this dynamic is also a source of genuine care and motivation, as Gion pushes his friend to overcome his past trauma and regain his confidence on the field. His other key relationship is with the team captain, Takuya Sekizan, who acts as a strict but caring big brother figure. Sekizan is constantly forced to remind Gion of his manners, often by pinching his cheeks, and is responsible for defining Gion's initial role on the team as a utility player focused on tackling.

Throughout the series, Gion undergoes significant development from a selfish brawler into a more strategic and team-oriented player. Initially, his philosophy is that rugby equals tackling, leading him to neglect teamwork and the fundamental skills of the game. He suffers a crisis of confidence when the coach harshly criticizes this narrow-minded approach, forcing him to realize that his reckless style is a liability to the team. Over time, his natural instincts and competitiveness begin to be refined. He learns to channel his aggression into specific techniques, such as tackling opponents around the knees and waist, their weak points, rather than just charging at them head-on. He also develops a role as a sweeper, clearing out opponents from the breakdown to speed up play for his team, and is eventually utilized as a decoy in set plays, a role that culminates in him scoring his first try. His growth is slow and laborious, defined by hard work rather than prodigious natural talent, which is exemplified by his exceptionally strong back muscles, developed from years of hanging from bars in a futile attempt to grow taller.

Kenji Gion's notable abilities center entirely on his physical attributes and aggressive mindset. His primary skill is his tackling, which he performs with relentless pursuit and surprising effectiveness despite his small frame. He learns to use his low center of gravity to his advantage, tackling bigger players low to unbalance them. He also develops an instinct for defense, learning to read an opponent's torso and belly button to predict their movements and avoid being faked out. While he initially has no discernible ball-handling skills, his competitiveness and never-say-die attitude allow him to relentlessly pursue the ball carrier, making him a disruptive force on the field.
