Description
Yuki Mori, daughter of Japanese undersecretary for foreign affairs Naoyuki Mori, was 11 years old when the Great Garmillas War erupted in 2191. She enlisted in the United Nations Cosmo Force on April 1, 2198. Officially assigned to the Far-East District Staff Office's Strategic Department 9th Section on September 7, 2198, she had actually joined months earlier to contribute to Program Yamato. Mori served as aide to Princess Yurisha Iscandar, sharing an uncanny resemblance and developing a close friendship. Yurisha entrusted her with a message capsule containing Queen Stasha Iscandar's holographic message.
In May 2198, Mori and Yurisha survived a car crash in an Earth underground city, later suspected as a terrorist bombing. Mori suffered amnesia, unable to recall events predating the attack. Orphaned, she came under the guardianship of Admiral Ryu Hijikata, whom she affectionately called "Uncle Hijikata." She continued working at the 9th Section alongside Hijikata, Chief Administrator Heikuro Todo, and Admiral Juzo Okita. She maintained a friendly relationship with colleague Yasuo Nanbu despite his unreciprocated romantic feelings. Outside military duties, she taught small children.
Assigned to headquarters operations during Operation M, Mori reported on Princess Sasha Iscandar's Mars approach. Later appointed as the Yamato's operations officer and radar operator, she managed information and electronics operations. Promoted to full lieutenant by the Yamato's February 11 departure, she initially clashed with tactics officer Susumu Kodai. Their dynamic shifted during an Enceladus landing party mission responding to a distress signal. Kidnapped by a Garmillas automaton and rescued by Kodai, she forged empathy upon learning of his brother's death, marking the start of their romantic relationship and eventual engagement.
Mori participated in pivotal battles during the voyage to Iscandar, including engagements at Jupiter, the Gliese 581 system, and Operation M2 at Pluto. She spearheaded communications for a crew ceremony allowing contact with loved ones before Yamato's final solar system departure, sharing personal details with Kodai about her memory loss and family history.
By 2205, Mori advanced significantly, becoming captain of the supply carrier Asuka (DAOE-01) at age 26 with the rank of lieutenant commander second class. Todo described this promotion as a "triple jump," recommending her for the position. She accepted to support Kodai while maintaining professional independence, believing equal footing required distance. Her command philosophy emphasized using barrier rounds and active resonance waves to protect companion vessels and return them to frontline duty, reflecting her protective nature.
Commanding Asuka as part of the 65th Escort Squadron during a Yamato fleet training mission, she diverted to assist upon learning of Garmillas' destruction and Iscandar's abduction, despite orders. At Iscandar, she witnessed Starsha revealing the planet's past and the Dezariam threat. After the Dezariam mothership's destruction, Starsha self-destructed Iscandar. Yurisha then entrusted Starsha and Mamoru Kodai's child, Sasha, to Mori and Kodai before fading away with Starsha.
Mori's relationship with Kodai remained central, influencing personal and command decisions. Her journey from operations officer to starship captain demonstrated resilience and adaptability, shaped by her background as a trauma survivor.
