Augustus, often called Gus, exists as a spectral sorcerer and one of three undead guardians who raised the human child Will within the ruins of the City of the Dead. In life, he stood as a renowned sorcerer-hero battling the Demon High King alongside the skeletal warrior Blood and mummified priestess Mary. Their deaths in that conflict led to a pact with Stagnate, god of the undead, binding their souls to undeath to guard the Demon High King’s seal.
Retaining his crotchety, irascible nature as a spectral being, Augustus exhibits a gruff demeanor while fiercely valuing personal freedom and independence—principles rooted in vows made to Whirl, God of Wind. He serves as Will’s primary instructor in sorcery and economics, stressing practical magic, critical analysis, and societal systems. His curriculum extends to foundational history, language, and resource management, though some knowledge lags by roughly two centuries.
Initially resistant to emotional bonds, Augustus forms a profound paternal connection with Will, viewing him as a grandson. This surfaces when he vehemently opposes Will using "G" for Gus instead of "A" for Augustus as a middle initial in the surname "Maryblood," revealing pride in his full name and role.
During a clash with Stagnate’s echo, Augustus intervenes to shield Will, sacrificing his tether to the physical world. He remains the City of the Dead’s sole guardian after Will departs. His spectral presence and deep knowledge continue influencing Will’s growth, particularly in mastering advanced magical techniques like the Words of Creation—including spells such as "Vastare" (vortex of destruction) and "Omnia Vanitas Erasus" (spell negation).
Throughout his existence, Augustus embodies pragmatic wisdom and concealed compassion, shaping Will’s leadership and problem-solving while grappling with his undead state and unresolved heroic legacy.
