Description
Tōru Hoshina serves in the Earth Federation Cosmo Force, beginning as a junior security officer aboard the space battleship Yamato during its critical first voyage in 2199. As a warrant officer reporting to Lieutenant Shinya Itou, he monitors crew activities and intervenes decisively during the mutiny orchestrated by Itou and Kaoru Niimi. Unbeknownst to the conspirators, Commander Heikuro Todo secretly recruited Hoshina to infiltrate and sabotage their plot. He frees loyal crew members, secures medical care for Admiral Okita, and disarms Itou on the bridge, preventing bloodshed.
During this mission, Hoshina develops a relationship with crewmate Yuria Misaki, who confides her troubling psychic experiences to him. He protects her upon discovering an Iscandarian entity controls her. When enemy forces wound Yuria, her concern for Hoshina breaks the alien influence. They later marry, with Yuria taking the surname Hoshina.
By 2202, Hoshina transfers to the broader UN Cosmo Force. He participates in the unauthorized mission to Terezart, aiding the Yamato’s escape by helping open the dock gates. Though detained afterward, his release follows the mission's official authorization.
In 2205, advancing to Lieutenant Junior Grade, Hoshina becomes head of security aboard the Yamato. He monitors cadet conflicts, investigating Ryusuke Domon’s background and uncovering falsified records Domon used to board the ship while harboring a grudge against Captain Kodai. Hoshina recommends Domon’s removal, but after Kodai overrules him, he permits Domon to remain under the accounting department’s supervision, observing Domon’s gradual acceptance of Kodai’s leadership during the Garmillas crisis.
Following the Iscandar incident, promoted to full Lieutenant, Hoshina is appointed head of security at Earth HQ. Under Todo’s Operation DAD, he spearheads investigations into Dezariam sympathizers within the military, identifying Space General Shino Todo as their leader. During the Dezariam invasion in October 2207, he coordinates resistance efforts at Earth HQ and attempts to evacuate personnel before the facility falls.
