Description
Mitsugu Yamaji is a supporting character in the anime Three Leaves, Three Colors. He is a young man of twenty-three years old with ochre hair, black eyes, and blood type A. His background is that of a former butler who served the Nishikawa family when they were wealthy. After the Nishikawa family lost their fortune, Mitsugu was let go from that position and became a freeter, meaning he took on numerous part-time jobs rather than committing to a single full-time job. This choice reflected his underlying motivation: he wanted to remain close to Yōko Nishikawa, the former heiress he had served, and continue to protect her. His personality is defined by intense devotion, bordering on obsessive. He frequently appears unexpectedly at Yōko’s high school, sometimes bursting into tears of joy when he sees that she has made friends. His actions are described as nearly stalker-like, but his genuine desire to look after Yōko tempers that impression. He is possessive in the sense that he has difficulty sharing what he considers his responsibility—Yōko’s well-being. In the story, Mitsugu’s role is that of a supporting figure who provides comic relief through his dramatic entrances and overprotectiveness. He also serves as a practical helper, such as when he works part-time to refill a school vending machine and gives Yōko clearance goods from his various jobs. His key relationship is with Yōko Nishikawa; he was her butler and remains fiercely loyal to her even after her family’s bankruptcy. He has minimal direct interaction with the other main characters, though his appearances often involve Yōko’s friends. Character development is subtle, as he gradually learns to trust that Yōko can manage on her own with her new friends, but his protective nature never fully fades. Mitsugu has no supernatural or combat abilities; his notable traits are his willingness to work many odd jobs and his almost supernatural ability to appear wherever Yōko happens to be.
