TV-Series
Description
Kamui from the anime Twin Star Exorcists is a powerful and significant character who serves as an antagonist. He is a Basara, a high-ranking and immensely powerful type of Impurity, or Kegare, and is noted as being the youngest among the eleven Basara. His most infamous act, and the one that sets much of the story's initial conflict in motion, is the murder of Benio Adashino's parents six years before the main events of the series.
In terms of appearance, Kamui undergoes a transformation after gaining more power. In his earlier form, he was larger and more monstrous, with spikes and a horn. Later, he takes on the form of a young man with dark skin and shoulder-length, light-purple or gray hair. His left eye is distinctive, being completely black with a red pupil and cracks around it, while his right eye is gold-colored. His typical attire includes a black tailcoat left open to expose his torso, and he is usually barefoot.
Kamui's personality is one of calm ruthlessness. He shows no mercy to humans or other creatures, often comparing them to mere insects, yet his actions are driven not by malice or a desire to see one side win, but by a singular, obsessive search for entertainment. He is fascinated by humans because, despite their weakness, they continue to struggle passionately against forces far stronger than themselves. This makes him a neutral and unpredictable force, as he genuinely does not care whether the humans or the Impurities are ultimately destroyed; he only cares about whether the battles he witnesses or participates in are interesting.
A key quirk of his personality is his habit of giving his opponents ten seconds to choose how they want to die. He finds the various reactions of people during this countdown highly entertaining. This is not a sign of fairness but rather a method to extract the maximum amount of drama and struggle from his prey. The only known exception to this were Benio's parents, who chose to sacrifice themselves for their child without hesitation, an act that surprised even him. He despises arrogance in others, such as when he is disgusted by the way Benio's brother, Yuuto Ijika, flaunts his strength. He also dislikes having his battles interrupted or his "prey" taken by others.
Kamui's primary motivation is the pursuit of life-and-death battles against strong opponents. He views powerful fighters as sources of entertainment and seeks to cultivate them if they show potential. This is the core reason he grants Benio new Kegare legs after her own are destroyed; it was not an act of kindness, but a calculated move to ensure she would become a stronger, more interesting opponent for him to fight in the future.
His role in the story is initially that of a major antagonist, being the object of Benio's revenge quest. He confronts both Benio and Rokuro Enmadou, the Twin Star Exorcists, and is impressed by their power and potential. Rather than killing them when he has the chance, he decides to let them live specifically so they can grow stronger, proclaiming them as his prey and looking forward to their next encounter. He acts as a catalyst, forcing them to become more powerful to face him.
Key relationships define much of his development. His primary relationship is with Benio, whom he tormented as a child and later empowers. He is both her target for vengeance and a dark benefactor. His interest in Rokuro is also significant, as he sees the boy as a potential source of great entertainment and challenges Benio for him at one point. His interactions with Benio, in particular, lead to the most notable change in his character. After journeying with her for a time, he begins to experience and be confused by subtle, human-like feelings. He saves a human child, an act he previously would have found worthless, and begins to feel something beyond his lust for battle. This culminates in him seeking atonement for his crimes and expressing a wish to live until the day the Twin Stars can finally exorcise him. In later parts of the story, it is implied he stops killing humans entirely.
As a Basara, Kamui possesses tremendous power far exceeding that of regular Exorcists or Impurities. In his humanoid form alone, he displays incredible strength, such as breaking Benio's leg with a simple flick of his finger and destroying her holy sword with a raised hand. He is also extremely durable, taking powerful blows from Rokuro's Kegare arm and having half his leg destroyed by a combined attack from the Twin Stars, all without being fatally wounded. He also has a potent regenerative ability, able to recover from injuries like a destroyed leg. He utilizes a cursed talisman to enhance his legs, an ability known as Danshin Angya, which tremendously boosts his speed and striking power, allowing him to bypass an opponent's defenses and transfer the shock of his attacks throughout their entire body. Furthermore, he can grant Impurity powers to humans, as he does with Benio's legs, replacing lost limbs and greatly enhancing their abilities. Like all Impurities, he also grows stronger by absorbing the spiritual power of those he kills.
