TV-Series
Description
Benio Adashino is the main heroine of the Twin Star Exorcists series and the heir to the Adashino House, one of the sixty-four most important exorcist families on Tsuchimikado Island. She is a teenage girl with bluish-purple hair and deep green eyes, whose age progresses throughout the story from fourteen to twenty.
On the surface, Benio first comes across as a cold, quiet person who dislikes idle conversation and is easily irritated. However, this reserved exterior belies a deep and passionate dedication to the craft of exorcism. When the topic turns to her duties, she becomes remarkably talkative and animated. Coming from a prestigious family, honor and pride are extremely important to her, and she carries herself with a strong sense of self-respect. She is highly competitive, particularly with her fellow Twin Star Exorcist, Rokuro Enmado, viewing him as her strongest rival and hating the idea of being defeated in any argument or contest. Stubborn and taught never to back down from her word, she will use any argument to win, though this competitiveness eventually masks a growing affection for him.
As her relationship with Rokuro develops, Benio reveals a much more vulnerable and caring side. She becomes easily embarrassed, sometimes to the point of fainting when overwhelmed, and shows her jealousy more openly as time goes on. A running gag involves her volatile cooking skills, which range from nearly inedible concoctions to surprisingly good meals that Rokuro hesitates to praise, fearing she will make them repeatedly. She also has an extreme, inherited fondness for the sweet rice ball treat known as ohagi.
Benio's motivations are deeply rooted in her family legacy and a personal tragedy. As the heir to the Adashino name, she is driven to uphold its honor and live up to the expectations placed upon her. A pivotal event in her past is the loss of both her legs during a battle with a powerful Kegare, a tragic incident connected to the series primary antagonist, Yuto Ijika, who is also her older brother. To compensate for this loss, she uses prosthetic legs made of impurity, which grant her unique abilities but also serve as a constant reminder of her trauma and her quest for revenge.
In the story, Benio is prophesied alongside Rokuro Enmado to be the Twin Star Exorcists, a legendary pair destined to marry and give birth to the Miko, a powerful exorcist who will one day cleanse the world of all impurities. Initially reluctant, she and Rokuro eventually accept their fate, and their partnership becomes the central force for combating the Kegare from the parallel realm of Magano. Throughout the narrative, she shares a complex and evolving relationship with her rival and partner, Rokuro, whom she eventually marries, taking his last name. Other key relationships include her teacher, Subaru Mitejima, and her close friend, Mayura.
Benio undergoes significant development, transforming from a prideful, lone prodigy to a cooperative and loving partner. Initially, her ego prevents her from expressing her true feelings, but as she warms up to Rokuro, she learns to show her emotions comfortably, including admiration and jealousy. Her arc also involves a profound struggle against her own lineage, as she confronts the legacy of her brother and ultimately merges with a powerful Kegare to gain new strength, blurring the lines between exorcist and impurity.
As an exorcist, Benio is exceptionally gifted and noted for being one of the few who can use multiple enchantments simultaneously to enhance her abilities. Her primary weapons are twin daggers, which she can sheath in spiritual power to harm Kegare. Her signature technique is the Dance of the Hazy Lotus Flower, a high-speed continuous attack. A defining aspect of her power is her prosthetic legs, known as the Cold White Fangs, which release the Kegare within them to greatly increase her speed and strength, transforming her feet into bladed weapons. Later in the series, she gains access to a powerful transformation known as the Kegare Princess form. When fighting alongside Rokuro, she can utilize Resonance, which amplifies their abilities and healing, allowing for devastating combined attacks like the Apocalypse Ray.
