Description
Kankuro Mitosaka is an exorcist who holds the esteemed position of Seiryuu, the Azure Dragon, among the Twelve Guardians, the most powerful protectors on Tsuchimikado Island. He is also the active head of the Mitosaka clan, a family traditionally responsible for medical care on the island. With blue eyes and azure hair, his most distinctive feature is the mask he almost always wears, a habit that began following a traumatic incident in his past. Though his age is not always specified, he is estimated to be in his late twenties. He typically appears in a dark military-style uniform, though he also wears traditional doctor's attire when tending to patients.

In terms of personality, Kankuro is generally calm and easygoing, with a kind and caring nature, especially towards those under his protection. He is considered one of the kindest members of the Twelve Guardians. However, this gentle exterior conceals deep emotional scars. In the past, Kankuro was responsible for a class of sick children known as the Sahanasaki Class, who affectionately called him Kanchan-sensei. A tragic event occurred during a field trip when a powerful impurity appeared and took the children hostage. Faced with the impossible choice of saving the children or protecting the island, Kankuro used a forbidden family technique, the Impurity Eater (also known as the Kegare Eater or Dragon Swallow Technique), to destroy the impurity at the cost of the children's lives.

This event left him profoundly traumatized. He came to despise the Impurity Eater, viewing it not as a powerful ability but as a curse symbolizing his perceived weakness and the abominable memory of killing his own students. To hide the seal of this power, which manifests as stitches over his mouth, and perhaps to hide his grief, he began wearing a mask. For years afterward, he fought battles with a reckless disregard for his own life, like a wandering ghost waiting to be freed from his guilt. He also developed a tendency to get angry if he felt underestimated, a possible defense mechanism stemming from his trauma.

Kankuro's role in the story becomes most prominent during his confrontation with the protagonist, Rokuro Enmado. His childhood friend, Kengo Ujii, who witnessed the original tragedy, arranges a match between Kankuro and Rokuro in the hopes that Rokuro can force Kankuro to confront his past. During the battle, Kankuro is initially unable to use his full power due to his psychological block. However, Rokuro refuses to simply defeat him and instead appeals to the person Kankuro used to be, telling him to fight as Kanchan-sensei for the sake of the children who admired him. This allows Kankuro to finally break free from his trauma. He removes his mask, reactivates the Impurity Eater, and truly engages in the fight, finding a sense of peace and self-acceptance regardless of the outcome.

Kankuro's key relationships are central to his development. His bond with Kengo Ujii is particularly important; they have been friends since childhood, and Kengo is one of the few people who knows the full truth of his past and consistently tries to help him heal, even enduring Kankuro's unusual and sometimes frightening medical experiments. Kankuro often teases Kengo by calling him Ken-chan. After his battle with Rokuro, he forms a strong respect for the younger exorcist, who helps him move on from his past. Following a wager, Kankuro loses the match and, as agreed, joins Rokuro's newly formed Enmado House as a Sanka, or courtier, while still maintaining his position as head of the Mitosaka clan.

As a combatant, Kankuro is exceptionally powerful. At the time of his match with Rokuro, he was considered the third strongest of the Twelve Guardians, behind only Tenma Unomiya and Tatara. His abilities are primarily based on dragon-themed talismans. He often enchants his gloves with a Dragon Scales, Expose Charm to manifest powerful, scaled gauntlets. His techniques include the Azure Flash, Dragon Clarity, and the Free Will of the Rising Frost Dragon, which allows his gauntlets to extend at incredible speeds, bend at sharp angles, and pierce targets from a significant distance, with claims that they can reach up to 200 to 300 meters. His ultimate and most dangerous technique is the Impurity Eater, a power passed down through the Mitosaka family that is said to have the ability to devour space itself. It is this power, which he finally learns to accept, that makes him a truly formidable exorcist capable of matching some of the strongest characters in the series.
