Lingyin Huang, also known by the nickname Rin, is a first-year student at the Infinite Stratos Academy and the Chinese representative cadet. She is the pilot of the personal Infinite Stratos unit named Shen Long. Her background is rooted in her childhood in Japan, where she became close friends with Ichika Orimura during their middle school years. At that time, she was often bullied by other students because of her Chinese nationality, and Ichika defended her, which led her to develop a strong crush on him. The two spent considerable time together at her family’s restaurant, where Ichika frequently ate because his sister was often away working. Before she left Japan, Lingyin made a promise to Ichika that if she could cook well enough for him, he would marry her, though Ichika mistakenly interpreted this as a promise of free meals.

Personality-wise, Lingyin is energetic, outgoing, and highly impulsive, often acting without fully considering the consequences of her actions. She has a quick temper and a competitive streak, which sometimes leads her to respond aggressively, especially when she feels jealous or threatened in her relationship with Ichika. Despite this fiery exterior, she is also caring and deeply loyal to her friends. Her motivations are largely driven by her affection for Ichika and her desire to be acknowledged by him, both as a capable IS pilot and as a potential romantic partner. She is sensitive about her flat chest and takes offense when others comment on it.

In the story, Lingyin serves as one of the primary female characters within the harem surrounding Ichika. She is the second childhood friend introduced, and her role often involves playful bickering with other heroines, particularly Cecilia Alcott, as well as showing a protective and possessive side toward Ichika. Her key relationships include her rivalry-turned-friendship with the other girls at the academy, her deep bond with Ichika, and her respect for his older sister, Chifuyu Orimura, whose cooking skills she admires. She is also acquainted with Gotanda Dan, a fellow student.

Throughout the series, Lingyin shows some development in tempering her impulsive nature, though she remains prone to emotional outbursts. Her abilities as an IS pilot are notable: she has an IS aptitude rating of A and is recognized for her exceptional physical prowess, including outstanding agility, dynamic vision, and powerful kicking techniques. She specializes in close-quarters combat, which is reflected in the design of her Shen Long unit. In the World Purge OVA, Lingyin is among the group of girls who enter a virtual reality system to defend the academy from a cyberattack. There, the malware known as World Purge traps her in an idealized romantic simulation with Ichika, forcing her to confront her deepest desires. After being rescued, she accidentally kicks Chifuyu upon waking, highlighting her characteristic lack of restraint.
