OVA
Description
Charlotte Dunois is a first-year student at the IS Academy and serves as the French Representative Candidate. Born as the illegitimate daughter of the head of the Dunois Corporation, a major French manufacturer of Infinite Stratos units, her early life was marked by neglect. After the death of her mother, she came to the attention of her father, who saw her aptitude for piloting as a useful tool. As a result, she was sent to the IS Academy on a covert mission. To get close to her target, the male pilot Ichika Orimura, she disguised herself as a boy named Charles. Her mission was to spy on him, collect data on his personal IS unit, the Byakushiki, and uncover the secret of how a male could pilot these machines.

In terms of personality, Charlotte is widely regarded as a kind, mature, and polite individual. Unlike many of her peers, she is not quick to anger or act on jealousy, which gives her a grounded and sensible demeanor. She is honest by nature and deeply dislikes deception, feeling a sense of relief when her true identity as a spy is finally revealed to Ichika. While generally composed, she can be impulsive at times, often creating awkward or embarrassing situations for herself and Ichika before realizing the implications of her actions. She also has a more playful and girly side, which emerges in her interactions with close friends, such as when she teases her roommate Laura Bodewig with matching cat-themed pajamas.

Charlotte's core motivation evolves significantly over the course of her introduction. Initially, her actions are driven solely by a desire to fulfill her father's orders and find a place for herself, having never felt wanted. However, when Ichika discovers her true gender and the nature of her mission, he chooses to protect her rather than expose her. This act of kindness and acceptance provides her with the courage to break free from her manipulative family. Her motivation shifts from duty-bound obedience to a personal desire for genuine connection and to forge her own identity, separate from the shadow of her past.

In the context of the story, Charlotte plays several key roles. She initially serves as an antagonist in disguise, but quickly becomes a central member of the protagonist's group. After her identity is revealed to the school, she cuts ties with the Dunois Corporation and re-enrolls in the IS Academy under her real name and gender, solidifying her place as a key companion and romantic interest for Ichika. In the Infinite Stratos 2: World Purge OVA, her role is that of a hero and a victim. She is one of five female pilots recruited by Chifuyu Orimura to combat an unknown enemy that has hacked into the IS Academy's core using virtual reality. During this digital operation, a malicious program called World Purge is activated, trapping Charlotte and the other girls in fabricated realities that fulfill their deepest, most ideal romantic fantasies involving Ichika. The narrative then focuses on Ichika's mission to rescue Charlotte from this virtual dream world.

Charlotte's key relationships are central to her development. Her bond with Ichika Orimura is the most significant; what began as a spy mission transforms into genuine love and trust. Ichika views her as exceptionally kind, and she holds unique status as the only character for whom he uses the special nickname Charu. Her friendship with Laura Bodewig is another vital relationship. Starting with mutual suspicion and rivalry, the two become roommates and eventually very close friends. Charlotte often acts as a social guide for Laura, helping her adjust to the nuances of daily life and social interaction at the Academy.

Throughout the series, Charlotte undergoes clear development. She transitions from a submissive, silent pawn of her father to an assertive young woman who makes her own decisions and defines her own identity. Having grown up unwanted, her time at the academy allows her to realize her own self-worth and to understand that she can be needed and loved by others. Her natural kindness is complemented by a growing confidence, revealed in her capacity to tease others and express her own desires openly.

As a pilot, Charlotte is highly skilled. Her knowledge of IS technology is vast, and she is known for her excellent instantaneous judgment during combat, a skill that allows her to utilize a technique known as High-speed Switch. Her personal unit is the Rafale Revive Custom II, an orange, second-generation IS. In its standby mode, it takes the form of a pendant she wears. This model is a heavily modified version of a mass-production unit. Its design strips away much of the standard armor in favor of enhanced weaponry and mobility, featuring a pair of split propulsion wings for high acceleration. The Rafale Revive Custom II boasts a wide array of conventional weaponry, including a 55-caliber assault rifle named Vent, a 62-caliber heavy shotgun called Rain of Saturday, and a close-combat blade named Bread Slicer. Its signature fixed armament, however, is the Gray Scale, a powerful pile bunker mounted on the left arm. This melee weapon is designed to pierce through an opponent's shield, making it a formidable trump card in close-quarters combat.
