Description
Shota Aizawa, known professionally as the Erasure Hero Eraser Head, is the homeroom teacher for Class 1-A at U.A. High School. A man of about thirty years old, he stands roughly 183 centimeters tall and has a birthday on November 8th. His appearance is famously unkempt, characterized by long, straight black hair that often hangs in front of his face, dark eyes that perpetually look exhausted, and a light stubble of facial hair. He typically wears a simple black costume and carries his primary tool, a capture weapon made of carbon nanofibers and special alloy wire woven into the appearance of a grey scarf. When he activates his Quirk, his hair rises as if defying gravity, and he wears yellow goggles to prevent enemies from tracking his line of sight.
Aizawa's personality is built upon a foundation of strict rationalism and logic. He has an intense dislike for wasting time and is known to be blunt, apathetic in demeanor, and utterly unconcerned with maintaining a heroic public image. In fact, he actively avoids media attention, believing that fame only interferes with his work as an underground hero. His teaching philosophy is harsh but pragmatic to an extreme: he has famously expelled entire classes of students whom he judged to have zero potential, arguing that letting students chase unattainable dreams is a form of cruelty. Despite this cold exterior, Aizawa is deeply protective of his students and demonstrates genuine care for their safety and growth, often going to great lengths and enduring severe injuries to protect them from villains. He employs what he calls a logical ruse, such as falsely threatening to expel the lowest-performing student, as a motivational tool to push his charges to their absolute limits.
Aizawa's core motivation is to prepare young heroes for the brutal realities of professional hero work, a philosophy born from personal tragedy. Among his other likes, he has a notable fondness for cats. His past as a U.A. student himself is crucial to understanding him. He was classmates and close friends with Hizashi Yamada, who would become the Pro Hero Present Mic, and Oboro Shirakumo. It was the boisterous Mic who gave the indecisive Aizawa his hero name, Eraser Head. During a work-study mission in their second year, a devastating fight with a powerful villain led to the death of Oboro Shirakumo. This event had a profound impact on Aizawa, hardening his resolve and shaping his rationalist, survival-focused approach to heroics. He became an underground hero, specializing in anti-villain combat and operating away from the spotlight.
Within the story, Aizawa serves as a primary authority figure and mentor for the protagonist class. His key relationships are defined by this role. He has a teaching philosophy that stands in direct contrast to the symbol of peace, All Might, leading to a mutual recognition of their different styles. His bond with his old friend Present Mic remains strong, with Mic holding a photo of them from their school days. In class, he maintains a stern but fair distance, though he has shown specific faith in students like Izuku Midoriya, whom he initially judged as hopeless but later acknowledged for his quick thinking. Aizawa’s development throughout the series is marked by a gradual but growing trust in his students' abilities. He evolves from a teacher prepared to expel any weak link to one who authorizes his students to fight in his name and confidently defends them against public criticism, as he did during the sports festival when explaining Katsuki Bakugo's volatile nature to the audience. His physical condition also becomes a part of his journey; after suffering grievous injuries including shattered arms and facial bones during the USJ incident, he continues to teach and fight, though these injuries have lingering effects on his stamina and Quirk usage.
Aizawa's notable abilities center on his Quirk, Erasure, which allows him to nullify the Quirk of anyone he is looking at. The effect ends the moment he blinks, a limitation compounded by his chronic dry eye, which prevents him from using the power for extended periods. The Quirk is also only effective against Emitter and Transformation-type Quirks, leaving him unable to erase the inherent physical abilities of those with Mutant-type Quirks. To compensate for these weaknesses, Aizawa is a master of close-quarters combat. He has spent years perfecting a unique fighting style using his carbon fiber capture weapon, which he can manipulate to restrain foes, bind their movements, and even enhance his own mobility. His official hero stats reflect this specialization, with a Technique rating of S, but a Power rating of only C. He relies on surprise, precision, and his strategic mind to disable enemies quickly before his Quirk's limitations or his own physical vulnerabilities become a factor.
