Description
Bao Zhilan is a Chinese operative and a member of the Annex Project, the mission to Mars. A burly man standing 183 centimeters tall and weighing 96 kilograms, he has a shaved head, prominent eyebrows, and a largely expressionless face. At twenty-six years old, he operates under the tutelage of the Chinese leader Liu Yiwu.

Bao possesses a notably amoral and pragmatic personality. He follows orders without concern for their moral weight and speaks with a blunt and unsettling frankness, discussing topics like murder with a neutral or even cheerful demeanor. His extreme pragmatism drives him to prioritize his own survival above all else, often choosing the most logical, if ruthless, course of action. This survival instinct, however, has consequences, as his willingness to sacrifice or manipulate others can provoke deadly retaliation. His primary motivation is to survive the deadly environment of Mars and complete his assigned objectives, showing little personal investment in the ethical dimensions of the mission.

In the story, Bao is a member of Squad 4 and participates in the violent power struggles on the Annex I. He is later tasked with a secret mission to capture the crew members Michelle K. Davis and Akari Hizamaru. He successfully incapacitates them and other crew members, but his escape is thwarted by the arrival of Joseph Gustav Newton. During the ensuing fight, Bao loses a leg and is ultimately left to be killed by a group of Terraformars. His key relationships are primarily defined by his allegiance to Liu Yiwu, whose orders he follows without question, and his antagonistic encounters with Joseph Newton and Marcos Eringrad Garcia, the latter of whom hides his rage from Bao after one of his clones tries to use Michelle as a diversion.

Bao is a skilled hand-to-hand combatant and proficient in swordsmanship. His primary ability comes from his M.O. Operation, which is based on the sea squirt Didemnum molle. This surgery grants him the power of asexual reproduction, allowing him to create clones of himself. Each clone has a slightly different, yet very similar, personality to the original. Due to China's incomplete RED-type operation, his physical strength is on par with other transformed characters. He also displays a high tolerance for pain, able to function normally even after being pierced multiple times by water-based attacks. Despite his power, his official M.A.R.S. Ranking is listed as number fifty, though this is considered a deception, as he would truly rank near number twelve if he were serious. Throughout the series, his clones are frequently killed, falling victim to Terraformars and to Joseph Gustav Newton.
