Description
Ivan Perepelkin is a Russian member of the Annex I project, having joined the mission to Mars alongside his sister, Elena, with the goal of finding a cure for the deadly A.E. virus that is ravaging Earth. His background holds a significant personal detail; he was originally born Ivan Zakriev, but upon discovering that Elena was his half-sister, he chose to adopt his mother's maiden name, Perepelkin, as his own. He is sixteen years old and stands at 173 centimeters tall. Among the combatants, he holds the tenth position in the M.A.R.S. rankings.

In stark contrast to the typically stoic demeanor of his other Russian comrades, Ivan is characterized by a consistently cheerful and positive outlook. He is fundamentally good-hearted, highly altruistic, and driven by emotion, though this is accompanied by a notable streak of naivety that makes him somewhat gullible. His fundamental decency is such that his mentor, Sylvester Asimov, describes him as a true communist and a good man. Despite his usual lightheartedness, Ivan is capable of becoming deeply serious when the circumstances demand it, revealing a hidden depth to his character.

Ivan’s primary motivation for joining the perilous Annex Project is intrinsically linked to his sister, Elena. Together, they sought a cure for the A.E. virus, a mission that is deeply personal to them. Within the story, he serves as a member of the Russian team under Asimov’s tutelage. His role becomes dramatically defined by tragedy when his sister is killed after his mentor orders the team not to take their M.O. drugs. This loss is a pivotal moment for Ivan; his resulting rage and grief catalyze a significant shift in his personality, causing him to adopt some of his late sister’s more serious and determined behaviors as he continues to fight.

His most significant relationship is undoubtedly with his sister, Elena Perepelkina, whose death is the central emotional driver for his character development. He also shares a bond with his mentor, Sylvester Asimov, though Elena's death creates a deep conflict between them. Ivan also develops a brief crush on the medic Sheila Levitt after she treats a wound he received while defending another crew member, Jet. Later in the narrative, he is shown assisting Russian President Vladimir Smiles with research and, with the help of a comrade named Sergei Seleznyov, participates in the rescue of Komachi Shokichi.

Ivan possesses a unique M.O. (MARS Operation) surgery based on the Datura stramonium plant, making him the first plant-type operative shown in the series. This ability allows him to weaponize the plant's powerful chemicals. By injecting enemies, he can induce a range of debilitating effects, including fever, hallucinations, breathing dysfunction, and even heart failure depending on the dosage. In combat, he also uses specialized grenades that disperse his own poison as a gas, poisoning all targets in a given area who inhale it. However, his control over his power has a notable flaw; he often struggles to administer the correct dosage, which means he frequently ends up killing his targets outright rather than capturing them alive as intended.
