Description
Kanako Sanjō is a young woman who joins the Annex I Project under the tutelage of squad leader Shokichi Komachi. She has short hair and black eyes, with a small physical build, standing 160 centimeters tall and weighing 42 kilograms. Her birth date is February 9. Prior to joining the mission to Mars, she came from a family with public profiles her mother was a television personality and her father a famous soccer player. Following in their footsteps, she had a promising future as a track and field star. However, her life took a downturn when her father was discovered using performance-enhancing drugs. Her mother’s involvement in illicit business dealings further fractured the family, leading Kanako to leave home. Burdened by mounting loans and constant pressure from authorities, she sought a way to sever her family ties and began looking for money, which ultimately drove her to join the dangerous Annex Project.
In terms of personality, Kanako exhibits a notable sensitivity regarding her physical appearance, particularly concerning her small bust size. This insecurity is a recurring trait, especially as depicted in spin-off material, where she reacts with extreme anger to comments about her figure or when others express preferences for larger chests. This sensitivity can lead her to confront or intimidate others, including fellow operatives. Despite her often serious demeanor as a fighter, this vulnerability adds a layer to her character, and she can become flustered in awkward situations, such as when she hastily excuses herself after encountering two naked women while on duty. Her motivations are rooted in her troubled past; she joined the project primarily for financial gain to escape her family's debts and legal troubles. Later, her role shifts toward survival and combating the Terraformars alongside her comrades.
Within the story, Kanako serves as a capable fighter and a member of the Japanese contingent of the Annex I. After the events on Mars and the team's return to Earth, she joins the Escort 1 unit. In this capacity, she works alongside Keiji Onizuka, investigating a series of kidnappings targeting Japanese citizens. Her speed and flight abilities prove useful in these operations, such as when she flies Keiji to an apartment to drive away a Terraformer threatening civilians. Her key relationships include her partnership with Keiji Onizuka and her unrequited romantic feelings for another Annex I member, Marcos E. Garcia, from whom she experiences rejection.
Regarding her development, Kanako begins as someone driven by self-interest to escape a difficult past. Her participation in the project throws her into life-or-death battles, forcing her to rely on her abilities and teammates. After surviving the Mars mission, she continues to serve as an operative on Earth, showing her growth into a more experienced soldier. Her equipment also sees an upgrade following the return to Earth, as she receives a more advanced body kit that can be conveniently converted into a pocket-sized bag.
Her notable abilities come from her M.O. Operation, which is based on the white throated needletail, a swift species of bird. This surgical modification grants her lightweight skin composed of amylose and greatly strengthened chest muscles, enabling sustained flight. She is exceptionally fast in the air, with a horizontal top speed of 350 kilometers per hour, making her movements too quick for Terraformars to match. Her primary combat method involves a special body kit weapon that features blades on her arms. She can swiftly kill multiple Terraformars in a single pass by flying directly through them at high speed. Her operational ranking on Mars is number 15.
