Stagnate embodies malice and undeath, once a virtuous deity guiding souls alongside her younger sister. As the firstborn of gods Volt and Mater, she holds lineage within the divine pantheon. Weariness with the cyclical rise and fall of heroes corrupted her path, leading her to embrace undeath as a means to eternally preserve her idealized heroes. This transformation reclassified her from a virtuous god to a malice god and cemented her enmity with the Earth-Mother, Mater. Her true divine form manifests as an anthropoid figure with long black hair, red eyes, and a one-piece fabric dress, often wreathed in a red aura. She employs multiple manifestations: her "Echo" typically appears humanoid—first slender, pale, and lifeless-eyed, later weakened into a young male form after half its power was destroyed. She also projects a herald: a black raven with crimson eyes for communication and observation. Stagnate exhibits a mischievous, cunning, and intelligent personality. She meticulously plans her goals, employing smooth-talking persuasion to amass followers, convincing many undead to serve her willingly. She possesses a tendency to tease, a sense of humor, and a genuine adoration for people—especially heroes—enjoying recitations of their legends. Yet, she harbors deep remorse and shame over the intense hatred and declarations of revenge voiced by her Echo in its final moments. Centuries before the main events, her Echo intervened directly in mortal affairs. Appearing before heroes Augustus, Blood, and Mary after their failed battle against the Demon High King, she offered a contract: undeath in exchange for their service as eternal guardians of the seal, coupled with her eradication of the demon horde overrunning their city. The contract bound their souls to her once their attachment to the seal faded. In the "City of the Dead" arc, her Echo returned to collect Blood and Mary as their attachment waned. Augustus intervened, splitting the Echo's power and severing his own attachment. The weakened Echo then approached William, offering an undeath contract. After William rejected this and declared hostility, Stagnate persisted in attempts to persuade or forcibly contract him. Discovering William under her sister Gracefeel's protection, the Echo refocused on Blood and Mary, only to be halted by Mater's intervention, allowing William to destroy it using the demonblade Overeater. The Echo's destruction was marked by overt hatred toward William. Beyond this conflict, Stagnate developed a personal fascination with William's growth, observing his journey despite his opposition. She repeatedly attempted to recruit him into her undead army and later confessed romantic feelings, including a proposal to bear his child. This created an unresolved dynamic with William, whose devotion to Gracefeel—Stagnate's sister—placed the goddesses in an indirect rivalry. Her abilities center on undeath and divine manifestations. She resurrects the deceased as conscious or mindless undead followers, with higher ranks retaining mortal intelligence and skills. She grants blessings, communicates via her raven herald, and wields prophetic revelation to project images of possible futures. Her mastery of the Words of Creation includes "Vastare," generating destructive vortices. The strength of her manifestations varies; her full Echo possesses significant, unknown power, while the weakened half-Echo retains abilities like contract creation, snake conjuration, and limited Words of Creation.
