TV-Series
Description
Aki Kaidō is the younger half-brother of Haru Kaidō and the twin brother of Shima Kaidō, being the older of the two twins. He is a teenager with brown hair cut to ear-length and brown eyes, and typically dresses casually in t-shirts, jeans, and sneakers.
In terms of personality, Aki is initially characterized by a strong sense of resentment and difficulty managing his anger. He is forthright with his opinions and does not easily warm up to newcomers. This is most evident in his early treatment of Ren, Haru's adopted younger brother, as Aki was the only one among the siblings who initially did not like Ren and openly rejected his presence in the family. Despite this prickly exterior, his motivations are rooted in a protective instinct toward his family. He holds a grudge against his mother, Haruko, for not being present when Haru was in a serious accident, which informs his wariness of people who might cause his brother further pain. Aki is also a diligent student, portrayed as a third-year high school student intensely preparing for his college entrance exams, and he eventually goes on to attend university.
His role in the story is primarily as a member of the Kaidō household, providing a grounded and sometimes resistant perspective on the evolving family dynamic. As the brothers all come to live together, Aki serves as a source of conflict and, later, reluctant acceptance regarding Ren’s place in their lives. His key relationships are defined by his position in the family. He shares a close but competitive bond with his twin, Shima, who is often more understanding of situations involving Ren and Haru. While Shima recognizes that Haru clings to Ren, Aki initially perceives the situation as Ren clinging to Haru, highlighting their differing views. His relationship with Haru is that of a protective younger brother who scolded Haru when he finally woke from a coma after their parents' death, showing a deep concern beneath his harsh words.
Aki undergoes significant development, moving from outright hostility to a more tolerant and even caring relationship with Ren. His progression is gradual; he moves from rejecting Ren to making an effort to coexist, and eventually to worrying about Ren's safety, such as when Ren was injured by one of Haru's guests or when Aki misunderstood that Ren was hurt and rushed over in a panic. This evolution transforms their dynamic into a normal, good-natured brotherly rivalry where they bicker over food and other trivial matters. Regarding notable abilities, Aki is noted to have excellent eyesight of 2.0, and his primary focus and skill lie in his academic studies, specifically his ability to prepare for and gain acceptance into college.
