Description
Mato Katori is the homeroom teacher for class one, year two at Yumegaoka High School and the adviser of the school’s Diving Club. She is a young woman in her late twenties, with pale skin, long dark‑brown hair that she usually ties up in a ponytail, and brown eyes. Standing 168 centimetres tall, she carries herself with an air of professionalism and confidence.

She is an experienced scuba diver and a dedicated educator. Although she can be strict and serious when the situation calls for it, she firmly believes that hands‑on experience and self‑discovery are essential for her students’ growth. Mato is kind and outgoing, readily sharing her positive energy with others. She is also fiercely supportive, encouraging her students and friends to push past their limits, and is not afraid to administer discipline when necessary. Her competitive nature surfaces often, especially in light‑hearted challenges with Hikari, and she dislikes losing. Outside of school, she can show a softer, more flustered side when placed in romantic situations, and she participates in the comic relief of the series—most notably through her playful but caring interactions with her younger brother.

Her passion for diving matches that of her students, and she serves as both a mentor and a diving buddy. She owns a Nissan Cube nicknamed “Pokoteng 3rd‑kun,” which she uses for club trips and personal excursions. Under her guidance, shy new members like Futaba gain the confidence to explore the underwater world, and she works alongside the club to foster a sense of camaraderie and wonder. Mato’s own development is subtle but noticeable: as the series progresses, she becomes more openly warm with her students and grows more comfortable balancing her role as a teacher with her personal friendships within the club. Her abilities as a diver are advanced, and she passes on technical knowledge—such as air pressure equalization and proper physical conditioning—through practical lessons and patient instruction. She embodies the blend of discipline and joy that defines the Diving Club, helping each member discover their own relationship with the ocean.
