Description
Kanba Takakura, born Kanba Natsume, is one of Shoma Takakura's twin adoptive brothers and the older adoptive brother of Himari Takakura. Born on March 20, 1995—the same day as the Tokyo subway terrorist attack within the series' universe—he is later revealed to be the biological older twin brother of Masako Natsume and the biological brother of Mario Natsume. Adopted into the Takakura family alongside Shoma and Himari under unspecified circumstances, Kanba deeply admired his adoptive father, Kenzan Takakura, especially after Kenzan protected him from flying glass during a typhoon despite being injured. Following Kenzan and Chiemi Takakura's deaths, Kanba took responsibility for the family's finances and livelihood as the eldest sibling.

Kanba exhibits a flirtatious, charming personality, earning a playboy reputation among former partners. His primary motivation is profound devotion to Himari, whom he prioritizes above all else, stating she is his "entire world." This obsessive determination to prolong her life drives him, regardless of moral or legal consequences, making him susceptible to manipulation. Sanetoshi Watase exploits this love, involving Kanba in criminal activities with the Kiga Group to fund Himari's medication and later in extremist acts like a train bombing. Kanba believes the ends justify the means, contrasting with Shoma's ethics and straining their relationship into violent conflict.

A defining childhood event saw Kanba and Shoma symbolically trapped in starving boxes. An apple, the "fruit of fate," appeared in Kanba's box, signifying he was "chosen" to survive; he split and shared it with Shoma, establishing their shared fate. Kanba's willingness to sacrifice for Himari manifests early when he gives part of his life force to her in Episode 1 and attempts to transfer his entire "fruit of fate" in Episode 12. His love for Himari carries implications beyond familial affection, with the series hinting at romantic feelings, particularly in the novel adaptation. In the finale, he fully transfers his life force to Himari, disintegrating into glass shards so she may live healthily; Himari later reciprocates by sharing the fruit of fate with him through a kiss. Following the siblings' confrontation with fate, Kanba and Shoma are reborn as young children, seen walking near their former home accompanied by the penguin spirits, implying a new beginning.
