Description
Mamoru Akaza is a supporting antagonist in Chivalry of a Failed Knight. He is a middle-aged man of large build with an Ebisu-like face, typically dressed in a black suit and hat. Akaza belongs to a branch line of the Kurogane family and formerly served as the chairman of the Ethics Committee within the Japan branch of the Mage Knight Association. His personal Device is a battle axe, which he wields as his unique spiritual weapon.

Akaza’s personality is marked by cruelty, greed, and a complete lack of empathy. He is driven primarily by self-interest and a desire for career advancement. His motivation for targeting the protagonist, Ikki Kurogane, stems from a promise of promotion made by Ikki’s father, Itsuki Kurogane. In order to secure that promotion, Akaza conducts a disciplinary hearing against Ikki, during which he subjects the young knight to brutal physical and psychological torture. He shows no concern for whether Ikki survives the ordeal, treating the hearing as a means to an end rather than a genuine pursuit of justice.

Akaza’s role in the story is that of an obstacle and a symbol of the corrupt, self-serving elements within the mage-knight establishment. He represents the political machinations of the Kurogane family’s branch line and the institutional abuse of power. His key relationship is with Ikki, whom he victimizes, and indirectly with Itsuki Kurogane, whose orders he follows for personal gain. Akaza does not undergo significant character development; he remains a static figure defined by his malice and ambition.

His notable ability is the use of his battle axe Device, which he employs during the hearing to physically harm Ikki. Beyond that, his authority as Ethics Committee chairman gives him a platform to manipulate procedures and pressure others. Akaza is ultimately defeated and removed from his position after Ikki exposes his misconduct, but the character does not reform or show remorse.
